This example that we’re showing is a nebulizer mouthpiece. You might be wondering why the mouthpiece isn’t in a circular form, but it’s really to relax the mouth when inhaling common medications such as bronchodilators like albuterol and levalbuterol, which relax airway muscles, and corticosteroids such as budesonide, which reduce inflammation. Using a circular mouthpiece would force the jaw to open up, causing the patient’s mouth to grow tired, making the brain focus on resting the jaw rather than properly taking in the evaporated medicine. If the mouthpiece isn’t circular, this would, not only waste money, but also allow the medicine to pass through the device less efficiently.

A real world example of an ellipse is on a medical device named "The blood pressure cuff". An ellipse is formed on the bulb of the blood pressure cuff. The blood pressure cuff works by inflating the cuff with the bulb, causing the air to squeeze the arm and block blood flow. Then, the air is slowly released so the device can measure the pressure of the blood as it flows again. This achieves the strand goals due to it being a biotechnology that monitors the blood pressure of an individual, it is also made of recycled condoms and latex, thus promoting green engineering, and the design of the pump being made of a shape of an ellipse.

We chose the elliptical shape of heart valve openings because it’s a real-life example where nature’s design directly impacts human health. The major and minor axes of the ellipse correspond to how the valve opens wide. In medical engineering and biotechnology, the elliptical shape guides the creation of efficient, anatomically accurate, and sustainable healthcare solutions.
