These are some book recommendations I found which could be read to the kids. One is the book: Why do I brush my teeth? Which has many great activities that you can do with your students. Another is the book: I Know Why I Brush My Teeth is about a boy who talks to his mother about dental health. One more cute and good book to use is the book called: Tooth Trouble by Jane Clarke (Author), Cecilia Johansson (Illustrator)

Melissa's Egg-spiriment

An "egg"spiriment could be done together. Which begins by explaining to the kids that the enamel on our teeth is similar to the shell on an egg. They both help to protect what's beneath. Then, put a boiled egg in a container with water and another egg in a container of cola. The students kept an eye on the eggs for a few days to see if any changes
occurred. It was discovered that the egg in the water did not change. However, there was some changes to the egg in the soda. The shell turned brown and its shell became weaker. You could rub off some of the egg shell. This experiment will help the kids knowldege of how sugary drinks and food can break down the enamel on their teeth and lead to cavities and toothaches.

You can schedule a dentist to come in. Some area even have dental programs where they will do free and low cost exams in your center. You could also go to a local dentists office.

We all know that teaching children about brushing their teeth can be challenging. Using a song however is a great way to not only get them kids excited, but they will likely remember the jingle and start to have a better understanding of what it means to take care of their teeth. Here are some of our favorite songs about teeth:

This is a great felt board activity. Cut out a happy tooth and a sad tooth,

as well as healthy food and unhealthy food (for teeth). Talk to the students

about the different foods and how they effect teeth. Then do the felt activity allowing them to place

the food near the teeth, determining whether the food would make teeth

Laminate some white cut out teeth.

Use dry erase markers to add "germs"

and "plaque" to the teeth. Explain that

even if we can't see them, there are

germs on our teeth, and we have to

brush well to get them off!!

Give the students toothbrushes and let

them brush the teeth clean!!

Just for fun! Take pictures of all the children

smiling. Cut just the smiles out (make them

big enough so they are easily seen). During

circle time, hold the smiles up one by one

and let the students guess whose smile it is
