This song appears to have the singer, Camila Cabello, as the speaker. The occasion behind the song was a follow-up of her previous song "Never Be the Same" (SongFacts). The audience appears to be her ex-lover since the video shows parts of their relationship in the past. The purpose of the song is to deal with the aftermath of a toxic relationship. Even though it was a happy part of her life, she later on realized it wasn't healthy (SMF). This then becomes the subject: reflecting, accepting, and moving on.

Lyric Analysis - Pathos

Looking at how emotion is portrayed in the lyrics, Camila expresses how she felt loving him. In the lines "Loving you was young, and wild, and free" she expresses how she was feeling from the start, feeling this young love as something new, free, and wild. Like most relationships at first things are young and feel free till you start to give it time for things to settle down. In her nect lyric "Found loving you was sunshine, but then it poured", "poured" can be a metaphor in this case to show how the aftermath was for her. At first, it was "sunshine and rainbows", but after the hard times you are left with sadness and loneliness. The last example would be "A steady place to let down my defenses". She means having that feeling of safety and being comfortable to be able to let her defenses and open up to him (SongMeanings+Facts).

Lyric Analysis - Logos

In the lyrics, Camila uses logos to express how she felt in her toxic relationship. In the first couple of lyrics "Lost a little weight because I wasn't eating" she is being literal about not eating enough from all the anxiety that she did end up losing weight. Another that connects to this one is "secret keeping stop the bleeding", Camila has been open about her OCD and anxiety that affects her from a very young age (Seventeen). In this line, you can interpret that she kept many secrets and due to her mental health, she started to harm herself by not eating and self-harm from compulsive behaviors (New York Post).

Camila Cabello acting as the speaker attempts to tell her ex-lover that she has reflected and is moving on from their toxic relationship. Camila uses logos and pathos in her lyrics and ethos and pathos in her video to get her message across. In analyzing the lyrics and video, the use of appeals is in an effective way to show her audience the transition from that relationship. In her album Camila, each song describes a part of her relationship from realization, going through it, sadness, and acceptance(SongFacts). She then shows how she is regaining herself as a person and moving on past that to improve herself as a person (teen vogue).

The lyrics overall have many appeals but mainly have logos and pathos as the singer, Camila, is telling her audience, her ex-lover, that she has accepted the fact of the break up and has moved on. Along with the video the meaning behind the song is more clear and understanding then just the lyrics. Overall, Camila is effective with her lyrics and video in telling us and her audience that she as reflected and is moving on from the toxic relationship.
