In the past, when people talking about leadership, I tend to think of the great individuals through human’s history. We talked about few of them during the class, for instance, Martin Luther King, George Washington, Mother Teresa and so on. These individuals are mostly presidents, emperors, generals and masters. They are great and untouchable. However, along with the learning experience, my understanding on leadership has been totally changed. Leadership is everywhere, it is never represented by a certain position, instead, it is a process and relationship between individuals. After understanding this idea, I am not studying this course aimlessly anymore. I realize that I can be a leader and I will be leader. The learning experience has become easier and better for me. Through the lessons, I have had a better understanding of myself. I have learned the best ways for me to move others and to move corporations. I have found the weaknesses of my characteristic and the ways to stronger them. Thanks to the journey, I now has become more confident, more passionate and has a stronger mind. This article is going to discuss my personal leadership vision, my leadership goals, the action plan for achieving the goals and the outcomes of achieving them. 

 My vision is to be an honest, creative, modest and open-minded leader and to be recognized internationally within hospitality industry. Above all, honesty, as the most important personality for leaders, creates perfect working environment for others. Being honest brings trust and motivations so that everyone on the team can be working on the same vision, same goals without any misgivings. This is what I valued most about being a leader and building a team. In addition, according to my self- awareness and class activities, I am an introvert with thoughtful mind and a humble attitude. In other words, I enjoy listening to others’ thoughts more than telling my own ideas; although I usually have plenty of thoughts flying in my mind, I am always willing to listen and learn from what others think first. I enjoy being this type of person but at the same time, I am always striving for a better version of myself. Being open-minded and being humble are essential in my leadership vision since I want to learn as much knowledge as I can through my entire career.

My first goal is to increase my knowledge. The level of my knowledge determines how far I am going to reach through my career. Being modest and open-minded is good, but after receiving all the information from others, I need high level of knowledge to identify the best one. Similarly, my creative mind can only be effective when I have enough knowledge on my area. Otherwise, I will provide others with the impression of indecision and unprofessional.

On the other hand, my second goal is to improve my interpersonal skills. During my past experience, I often find difficulties in dealing with people.First of all, I am not good at showing myself in front of others. I missed plenty of opportunities because of my hesitation. Moreover, I am also not good at persuading or rejecting others, it will lead to serious discipline problems in the future. Thus, I have to be more confident, more decisive and I have to improve my persuasive and conflict management skills.

The most effective way to increase my knowledge is to read books. Either the textbooks from Royal Roads University or the documentary books of each hotel brand. Through the books, I can learn various valuable information, study from the professionals and learn from each hotel’s past operations. The first book that I am going to read is “The Fairmont Empress: The First Hundred Years”. I believe it will be a great experience. Besides, I will subscribe to professional hospitality newspaper and magazines such as “Hotelier” to catch up with the news and industrial trends. Furthermore, I will plan on trips to different hotel brands at different places every year. The field trip activities of Royal Roads University are mind blowing. Therefore, I want to keep a habit of visiting different hotels at different area regularly to keep getting diverse experience, diverse information and diverse vision.

In addition, I used to feel uncomfortable to interact or disagree with others. For this problem, I will try to conquer the fear and attend as many events as I can. No matter it is a friend’s birthday party or a professional meeting. I will try to be ready to attend the events, to show myself, and to interact with people.

The learning process of leadership is incredible. Now I am able to understand myself better, to set actual career vision and goals, more importantly, to create an effective action plan on how to accomplish these goals. My vision is to become a knowledgeable, wise, humble and open-minded leader. I believe my plans on gaining knowledge through readings and travelling; building better interpersonal skills through attending a variety of events will produce a better me and fulfill my ideal.
