Middle and Upper class are more "polite" when discussing, while lower-class students tend to use more emotions to have a more meaningful conversation, but this can be seen as "upsetting the classroom". This tends to lead to conflicts because people discuss differently.

One clear example of class conflict that hook describes is when she was asked if she was at Stanford on a scholarship. She explains "Underlying this question was the implication that receiving financial aid “diminished” one in some way."

They struggle to put aside prejudices in the beginning of the film, leading to conflict. Most of the students in the school came from low income neighbourhoods (most of them were not white). It shows how they have to overcome adversity in the classroom and in life.

She states that class is traditionally approached in classroom through a capitalistic and minority segregated way, meaning that those who are in working and poor classes, and minorities have less power in voicing out their personal views in a classroom setting. Working and poor class individuals also prominently think about how they'll pay for the degree rather than the education they will be receiving. With minorities like POC and women, they feel less that they possess less power in what they say through their differences from rich and white individuals.

On another note, those concerned with her financial background found any financial aid to diminish her value. In the teaching position, she was concerned for the black students who might be alienated after adopting ideas which strayed from their families' beliefs.
These experiences translated into hooks' teaching style, as she tried to accommodate those who might've felt they did not have a voice. She found that listening to others' perspectives inspired a greater understanding of each other and their own potential to succeed.
