HOW THE 1st and 2nd Laws of Thermodynamics are represented:

10% of an organism’s energy is transferred in the food chain/food to each trophic level, thus expressing the 2nd law of Thermodynamics. For instance, within the producer troph, the producers are the foundation of the energy for the entire food chain/web. Producers provide 100% of their energy to primary consumers. Primary consumers 10% of their energy to secondary consumers and tertiary consumers receive 0.1% of the secondary consumer’s energy. Additionally, the 1st law of Thermodynamics is expressed in the food chain/web when it displays the continuous flow of existing energy; energy that has not been created nor destroyed throughout the entire food chain/ web.

Beluga whales are decreasing in population at an alarming rate, causing a near extinction of all Beluga Whales. The rapid decrease in Beluga Whale population is causing an increase in the population of seals and octopuses. While on the other hand, the polar bear population is facing a decrease because of the lack of beluga whales available. This causes the overall ecosystem to suffer because organisms are gaining less energy and failing to survive due to the decrease in population of their food source.

An extinction of kelp would cause a drastic change in the ecosystem. All of the trophic levels would suffer; the herbivores/ primary consumers ( Sea stars, salmon, shrimp, and crabs) would drastically decrease in population. This would cause the carnivores and omnivores to decrease as well because their food source is not retaining as much energy from organisms as they previously would have.
