It's been one week since the emergency state was declared. I think that I'm starting to normalize to be at home almost all day. Today I wake up at 8 am and, as I always do, I put the radio. After 1 hour of news and more news about coronavirus they interviewed one guy who had run 61 Km in his small livingroom. Just 10 and half steps was the distance in that he made this race. And of course he is a profesional athlete used to run marathons, triathlons and other stuff like this. But he give me an idea. The longuest distane that I can do in my small home is similar, only 13 steps. So yeah, I put on my running shoes and I started to run. OF course I haven't done 61 Km. I've just done one hour, but for me it'ss okay.
The important thing is to find things to do at home, because this situation seems that has arrived to stay.

Differences between countries in the implement of the confinement.

In the world there are different strategies to fight the Coronavirus pandemic. The first country In apply the confinement was China in January. They implanted a total confinement of his population in the province of Hubei. There was no possibility to go out even for go to the supermarket or to work. Only strategic companies kept open. It was a major restriction.

After January Coronavirus expanded rapidly in Europe, and Italy was the first country to declare the state of emergency. First in the northern provinces of Lombardy and Veneto and after in all the country. The restrictions are not as China because citizens can go out to the supermarket, the pharmacy, to do some exercise near home and to go out with the pet. A similar thing is that since 23th of march only strategic or basic industries still open.

In Spain the situation is similar to Italy. Here we have a lot of companies still open but there are major restriction for citizens; there is no possibility to do some exercises out door and to go out with someone.

There is a long list of states that had implemented the confinement of their citizens with more or less severity; France, Denmark, Belgium, Norway, Sloven, El Salvador, Argentina, Peru, Rwanda, Jordan, Lebanon, Poland, Grecce, New Zeland, Malaysia, Australia, United Kingdom, and Dominican Republic. Other countries are very close to implement the confinement, but they have not done yet. Countries like United States, Mexico, Germany Ireland or India.

One different strategy was the strategy defended by Boris Johnson. His initial idea was to not close the economy and not implement the confinement of their citizens. The idea was to have a “controlled” expansion of the pandemic and to build a herd immunity. Their principal argument for this strategy was that even implementing confinement the pandemic will growth, and that economy is too much important to send the people at home and paralyse almost all the country. Also, they defended that would send at home all the population considered in risk and all the population affected by Coronavirus. Netherlands had a similar approach to the problem but both of them has changed the strategy to avoid an overwhelmed health system and high toll of deaths.

There are other countries with a similar approach to the problem. One of them is Sweden.

I think that the better strategy is a balance between restrictions and economy. Major restriction like close all companies and paralyse all the country can carry very negative economic affects. The world economy will start a great crisis and is important no forget that.
Sources: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/23/swedish-pm-warned-russian-roulette-covid-19-strategy-herd-immunity
https://www.elperiodico.com/es/sanidad/20200322/parecidos-diferencias-confinamiento-coronavirus-paises-7899701
https://www.economiadigital.es/politica-y-sociedad/cuarentena-por-coronavirus-en-que-paises-se-ha-declarado-el-confinamiento_20046621_102.html

31 of march. The right of vote in USA

Today I read an article about some President Trump declarations. In these declarations he says that Republicans would never again been re-elected if they made easier to vote. And I think he is right. In USA the barriers to vote are high and there is a lot of people who can't vote and a lot of people who could but don't vote.
Usually is people from minorities and the most underprivileged who suffer these limitations. The different states stablish different measures "designed to suppress the vote", like the necessity to be registered, the amount of documentation that you are required, and an ID photo. And some states are very strict whit that.
some states like Georgia are approving very complicated voting requirements in a very strictly way. That means tan tens of thousands of persons are getting out of the elections. In 2016 only "64 percent of Americans who where eligible to vote were registered". In comparison, United Kingdom had 91 percent.
There are other barriers. In USA, the people in jail doesn't have the right to vote, and there are only 15 states that automatically restore voting rights once they are released and again in society.
There just two states who allow to vote while you are in jail. Maine and Vermont. But is interesting to know that these two states are states where most of the prisoners are white. And this, is very unusual in USA.
Sources: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/mar/30/trump-republican-party-voting-reform-coronavirus
https://foreignpolicy.com/2018/11/05/why-is-it-so-hard-to-vote-in-america/
https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2019/06/prisoners-in-just-two-states-can-vote-heres-why-few-do/

In the last days we have seen how India, the most inhabited country in the world is dealing with confinement. There, the government of prime minister Narendra Modi established a total confinement. That means shops, factories and restaurants are closed.
But the thing is how poor countries are dealing with the economic consequences to be confined at home. For the people in the “not developed” countries to be at home is not even a choice a lot of times. In India millions of workers are daily wage workers with a “hand-to-mout” existence”. That mean that day live day to day, without any saves and possibilities to stay for long without work. Also millions of workers are from small villages and now they have to return in a long walking travel that can last several days.

Of course, other problem are the homes. While millions of families are living in a one or two rooms homes there are millions that they are directly homeless and nowhere to go.

This situation is similar in other “not developed” countries and high percents of poor populations living with the minimum. In Egypt, for example, they have a huge informal work sector. And now with the confinement millions of these informal workers are without any income and without saves and possibilities to resist for long to stay at home.

So, the contrast with the western countries is huge. The reals ones who will suffer the coronavirus crisis will be, as always has been, the most underprivileged part of our world.

2 of april. The long reads

I think that now that we are in confinement and we have more time, we have to find things to be busy.

So I already read two of them and they are quite interesting. One titled “The epic, dangerous and weirdly emotional final journey of an oil rig” and the other “The Spy who couldn't spell: how the biggest heist in the history of US espionage was foiled”.

There are many topics in this long reads. They speak almost about everything. The thing that connect all of them is the detail what they use in these articles. They go all the times to the small details and facts like in a novel.

So, if you are bored with your live in confinement, here you have a good option to pass this quarantine. I know that there are many options to pass the quarantine, but remember that August recommended highly to read these “Long reads” since the beginning of our English course!!
