Bucky suffers from PTSD from being in Hydra’s control as it has its effects on him through his nightmares. There's a scene where it shows his distress that effects him throughout his sleep.

Barnes revealed to Sam during their therapy session that Bucky was offended that Sam gave up the shield because it meant that if Steve was wrong about Sam, then it could also mean Rogers was wrong about Bucky.
