“In Amherst, teen journalists’

investigation of transphobia at the

middle school forced a district shake-up”

In the article, “In Amherst, teen journalists’ Investigation of Transphobia at the middle school forced a district shake-up” by Brooke Hauser talks about how Lee Khashu, a transgender male who just graduated 8th grade at the Amherst Regional Middle School is being misled by the other students and faculty. In the article, it states that Khashu’s family has brought up this problem several times to the school and they said these incidents are isolated interpersonal problems rather than bias incidents. Students at the school would bully Lee and call him out for using the women’s bathroom. He didn’t want to wait for the gender-neutral bathrooms to open up, so he chose the next option which was to use the women’s bathroom. Lee was experiencing suicidal thoughts from all the harassment and bullying he was getting from the school. The Amherst Regional High School’s student journalists brought this topic to attention and wrote nearly a 5,000-word report.

In my opinion, I think the student journalists and their teacher did a great job covering this topic in their online student newspaper. In their report, the students included this quote, “transphobia and anti-LGBTQ language and behavior were allowed to fester at the middle school over the course of two years, despite students, parents, and staff repeatedly voicing concerns to school and district leadership.” Most of the faculty at Amherst Regional Middle School were faced with accusations of failing to protect trans students.

Some steps i could do to verify if this information is true is:

asking people if they were there or not to see if its true.
If its not too dangerous maybe going to the location and seeing if there was damage from it and if there wasnt then you’ll know its not true
Look at the location to see if ther ewas any news written about it or ask around to see if people were there or not.

“Suspension rescinded for L.A. journalism teacher who refused to censor student article”

In the article “Suspension rescinded for L.A. journalism teacher who refused to censor student article,” by Christian Martinez it states that the Los Angeles school officials rescinded a suspension they had against journalism advisor Adriana Chavira. The suspension was brought up due to refusing to censor an article that named an unvaccinated campus librarian. During this time, Chavira was faced with a three-day suspension without pay due to the article that was written on The Pearl Post. Chavira appealed the suspension and won with the district rescinding the discipline at an after-school meeting on Friday.

After reading about this situation I am glad Chavira stood her ground and protected her students. Judea Pearl backed up Chavira and the journalism students at DPMHS which made a huge impact. I understand the emotion that Chavira went through as well as her students.

We could show something on the eras tour. Im not sure if this was already assigned as a story but me personally i know alot of people who are a fan of taylors swift and who wanted to go to her concert. We could do a video Q and A or a written Q and A about what students thought about her tour, her outfits, or just her music in general. I feel like teenagers would be really interested in this because the Eras Tour was really big over the summer and caught a lot of peoples attention.

I feel like this is important information to have shown and I dont think i would include this in the yearbook. The reason for this is because i feel like its very harsh information and the yearbook in my opinion is supposed to be information thats good but also informing and positive.
I wouldnt take out the article I would probably just change their pronouns and write something on the top of the article saying that we changed their pronouns.
I wouldnt take this article down because it was already published an people have already seen it. Its pointless to take it down if it was already published and out for people to see.
I think this shouldnt be written. I feel like its a personal issue that some people dont want out there. I wouldnt include the photo because its personal and should not be out there.

For the first paragraph you can start off with Junior Francesca Sisk …
First paragraph is a run on sentence, try adding a period in there or re write it.
Avoid putting schools name in the lead.
Great quote. Try to find one that has more emotion that goes with the lead.
Quote doesnt have attribution or comma.
Last paragraph is great, it has a lot of information. I would try to add another period in there so it doesnt sound like a run on sentence.
Ask Francesca why she wanted to major in astrophysics and include that somewhere in your article.
Include the full name of the school she wants to attend.

Over the past 4 weeks i feel accomplished with my work. I have stayed on top with my work mostly. For yearbook I am excited to figure out our themeand that is one of my goals. I got to take some photos during spirit week which was fun. Overall I think I am doing good on staying on top of everything. I agree with his statement, capturing this moment gave everyone a different perspective of this event. These photos are being remembered by millions of people today. It teaches us how emotionally hard it was for the photographers to capture these moments.Some incidents photographers should put their camera down depend on the moment the picture is being taken. For example the photograph of the person falling. I don think this should have been posted just for the respect of their families.
I think the quote means that photographers captured these traumatic moments for everyone but it is also gave people a different perspective of the moment. Photographers are able to capture all these moments and the emotions on that day.
The importance of photographers at any event are to capture moments that people are going to want to remember. Although this was a traumatic time for many people, looking back on the photos gave more of an understanding during the attack. People are going to want to remember this moment and not forget it.

One highlight from my weekend was homecoming and getting to hang out with my friends longer outside of school hours. Another highlight was that it was my grandma’s birthday and I got to spend time with my family and cousins that I hadn’t seen for a long time.

For the first spread, I chose to analyse Mill Valley High Schools magaizne cover. This one specifically caught my attention because they used vibrant colors and had alot of great designs. The design was a graduation cap with lines leading in different directions with people on those lines. In large letters they wrote Infinite Paths. I love how they went with that theme on their cover page and included different paths that students are taking. I love the graphic designs on their pages. I think the designs could be a great inspiration to our spreads and help us out.

The second spread, I chose to analyse Community High Schools magazine cover. The name of their cover is “The Communicator Magazine.” One thing i dislike so far about the magazine is how they are lacking in color and design. On their cover page they have a human heart designed on there. I think this could have been designed into something more eye catching. Overall i think they couldve used more color and possibly added more designs.

For the third spread, I chose to analyse St. Paul Academy and Summit Schools magazine. This magazine also caught my attention. The cover of the page has cut outs of the students at their school holding up letters spelling out “Culture.” I love the idea of this because it incorporates the students at the school and its really creative. I like the color combination of the spread as well.

The first spread I chose was from Cranbrook Kingswood Middle School for Boys. I like the cover page because it shows leading lines and points out the main focus which is the student. I think they could have added more color to make it stand out more. I like how they listed the pages of each topic like features, sports, opinion, etc.

The second spread I chose was from Branham High School. This spread caught my attention because of the different variety of colors they used. I think their cover page is really creative with the post-it notes on peoples faces and carried their theme throughout the page. I like how they included alot of information on the front page but also made the focus to be the design of the spread.

For the third spread, I chose one from McCallum High School. I really like this spread because they used the theme throughout the page. When I saw this spread I loved the creativity they used with the ice cream and it melting through the persons hands. I like the colors they used. One thing I would have added was different fonts. I noticed they used the same variety of fonts. I think if they used more creative fonts it would have been more of an eye catching spread.
