The Cold War

The Cold War was the tension that formed between the allies and the Soviets following the second world war. The war was completely politically and economically based, never becoming physical. After the surrender of the Nazi party, the alliance between America, Britain and the Soviet Union began to deteriorate. It was feared that the Soviet Union would continue to takeover Eastern Europe, spreading communism. In 1947, the U.S. sent aid over to Western Germany to claim it for their own. The Soviets claimed East Germany. This was the semi-official beginning to the Cold War. This conflict lasted for much of the second century, with the world most powerful nations on the verge of disaster.

Germany was split with a communist East, and a democratic West. The metaphor of the “iron curtain” is used to describe the division of the continent. A physical wall also splits the city of Berlin. Prior to this, citizens would escape to West Germany and to freedom. Life in East Germany was strict. The citizens were under constant surveillance by the Ministry of State Security and would sometimes report on those around them. In West Germany the citizens lead comfortable, thriving lives. The wall remained up until the 1980’s when a crowd on citizens knocked it down.

People sought change through propaganda. It was the goal to reunite the broken country and to stop the Soviet’s spread of communism. In Anatoly Chernyaev diary she explains her excitement for the upcoming change. Eastern Europe collapsed in 1989-90 and both parts were united. The war ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Europe became democratic.

Taking place during the Civil Rights Movement, Lily is surrounded by the effects of segregation. With her housekeeper in jail for disrespecting a group of white men, they wanted to escape to safety. The problem with this was that it was hard to find a place of safety when she traveled with an African American woman. This created many problems for their traveling. There were only certain places each of them could stay. Also, it was a challenge to remain inconspicuous when a young white girl was traveling alongside a black woman. So, they found refuge in a home of black woman where her no dead mother once lived. She learned to love and appreciate their way of life. Her experience of living with them sparked a hope for change. Then, she began her new life as a member of their family.
