I am teacher for german, geography, IT and multimedia at the Ski-Akademie Schladming (in the center of Austria). Why Why am I interested in the topic?
1. As we always have foreign students at our school (to become professional sportsmen and - women) we have sometimes classes with students from 6 or 7 nations.
2. As you know starting a year ago nearly 1 million refugees escaped from their homes via the Balkan and passed through Austria (90.000 seeked for asylum in my country). Since them I am engaged in different activites - from assisting refugees in refugee camps or at the border, giving german lessons, and just talking and spending time with refugees.

So I hope to get different ideas how to deal with refugees/cultural diversity in school - and may be "in real life".

The picture you chose for this diary worths a million words: it inspires strength and tenderness at the same time, what any teacher should give and teach to his students. In a world where we have more and more been forgetting the value of "humanity"!
I've followed your posts on facebook and I just can tell you that you are a special man. Have a nice day!

More and more we are facing people and students from other countries. Globalization will become more than importing and exporting products. People from all over the world are looking for a better life or just seeking shelter. So we have to "live with them" to share our country, our village. And we have new influences of other religions like the Islam. So I am curious to see how other teachers handle this challenges.

The most important for me is to be open for other cultures and to approach students without prejudices. Adn it is also very importatn to be aware of your own values and to defend them. You must make clear that societies are different and that in your society there are certain rules everyone has to follow.

In my school we have not such an "eye" on students from other cultures or nations. This depends on the general focus on professional sport where we don't make any difference - and we don't have more then 10 students from foreign countries. So they have to follow the rules like any other student.
In Austria the models are different depending what kind of school it is and where the schol is located. For example: In primary schools we have sometimes more than 50 percent "foreign" children (going up to 95%!). So there you have a totally different background.

So they are integrated in the classes (or professional sport activities) and the ones who don't speak german at all get some private lessons.

They had to make a presentation in german language about some topic. So I proposed to present something about their country.

We try to have a kind of school-identity. Every students gets at the beginning of the school a folder and a scribbling blöock with the logo of the school. The professional sportsstudent get training clothes, T-Shirts, winter-jackets with the school logo and school colours. So they can identify with school in wearing this clothes. (no matter where they come from). On the other hand we have the "sport"communieties: the alpine skiers, boarders,.. who have a stronger camaraderie.

It is a previleg to be born in Austria, ta have a a bed, something to eat,....I am working since more than 35 yeras with people from different culturs. I can tell them a lot about my contacts, travels, other countires.
