Center of medieval life: festivals,fairs,religious services, markets

Focused on education

Assisted poor and sick

storms , disease, and famine were believed to be punishments from god

People believed religious devotion, prayers, religious loyalty would keep disasters away

Christians are people who follow Jesus

Jesus was believed to be the Son of God 

Because of this belief, Romans persecuted christians 

After a while, christianity became the main religion

The Roman Catholic Church had monks who lived in monasteries which converted lots of people to the christian faith

By the High Middle Ages, church leaders created a system that was an organization of the old Roman government

All the members of the clergy had a rank, with the Pope being the supreme leader

The church held a large amount of economic power, political power, land, and money during the Middle Ages.

The church’s power often got into conflict with European monarchs especially the fight between Pope Gregory VII and Henry IV. When Henry IV challenged the pope’s power, the pope excommunicated him.

Eventually, Henry IV begged for forgiveness.
