Funding

All public schools in NC need more funding and teacher salaries need to be increased. Many of our teachers need to have 2nd jobs in order to support themselves and it is increasingly difficult to recruit educators due to salaries.

Is there a possibility for DPI to create a comprehensive list of annual reports and requirements - that may help to evaluate and consolidate some of the reports that we are required to complete?

Charter school funding model

It would be great to examine the funding model so that charter schools are not seemingly pitted against traditional public school districts because of the way funds are distributed

Would love to see a charter rep (or another type of participation) in superintendent meetings - that could help to eliminate some of the communications challenges we face and could open up some potential opportunities for collaboration.

I'm curious about the weighted funding proposal but I am also very concerned about it. It has to include MORE funding, not less or the same. We can't lose funding from some students in order to pay for others - and I fear that will be the outcome.

Hearing from another school that about 30% of their students have IEPs or 504 plans makes me curious - our population has always been at least 30% IEPs/504s and has been as high as 45%. Is this true across all charters? We also serve 60% boys/40% girls every year - which leads me to wonder what is happening in district schools that leads families of students with disabilities and families of boys to seek us out

I feel like CMS should be providing these schools to a wider audience of parents who are interested in these schools. Traditional schools are not for everyone.

Example Colorado has a math toolkit which is different from a traditional tutor.com as an example. It helps students understand concepts of how to solve math problems in a way that allows them to learn the basics of the problem solving process. I think NC educators need to take a trip around the US to high performing schools to understand what works best and use those ideas in our schools.
