 Esperanza felt this way because she was confused her mama said yes to YiLuis' proposal to marry him. She and her mom did not like TiLuis . They did not want to live with him, because he cared about money more than family or people he just wanted mama's money, and wanted mama to vote him for the lottery.

Miguel wanted to preach to Esperanza that rich people don’t care for the poor, they just turn their backs on them (like what Esperanza used to do) and the poor people help people like them. An Indian lady that was crippled begged for money and food at the rich people but they ignored her. Carmen helped the lady even though she was poor. Esperanza felt guilty when he was done talking.
