Walter Raleigh was the thirst man who brought potatos and tabacco back from America.Around 1552 or 1554, Walter Raleigh was born in Hayes Barton, Devonshire, the fourth son of a noble but poor Protestant family. In 1569 he took part in the Wars of Religion in France on the Huguenot side under Admiral Coligny. After almost five years in France, he joined forces with his half-brother, Sir Humphrey Gilbert. Together they undertook some pirate voyages to the West Indies. The attempt to sail to North America in 1578 to fulfill Gilbert's dream of a colony of settlers failed.Like his half brother, Raleigh went to Ireland in 1580. There he served as commander of an English company in the subjection of the country.

Queen Elizabeth I became aware of him through his military actions in Ireland. Raleigh came to the English court in 1581 and won the favor and friendship of the queen. From this he was ennobled on January 6, 1585 as a Knight Bachelor.
