I usually volunteer at camps in YMCA, and I major in agricultural science at university. I am able to take interest in many different things and devote myself to them— for example, I go on about 20 camps a year to improve my abilities and to give back to my YMCA what I have learned.

Also, making use of what I study in agriculture, I have initiated various programs at YMCA. Focusing on the concept of a sustainable planet—which is not emphasized very much in Japan—I have created camps that avoid using plastic and carried out environmental education for children.

We are planning to launch a free school at our local YMCA. In our community the economic and educational inequalities are very large, and there are many children with foreign roots. Many children are unable to keep up in the traditional school system. For those children, we want to use the spirit of volunteerism at YMCA to establish an affordable free school, which can also serve as a safe space and function like a tutorial or after‑school learning center. Under the current system in Japan, there are children who fall through the cracks of various support services, and children who are completely overlooked by society and become isolated. I believe YMCA can be an organization that has an impact even in such situations, that by expanding our activities nationwide, we can bring about a positive influence on society.
