1. The consequences of those who don’t conform to society are alienation and being looked down upon by all who have comformed. When one doesn’t conform, they instantly stand out as an outlier, or someone who just doesn’t fit inside the natural puzzle of the community. Therefore, they are seen by everyone else as different, odd, or weird. It is very difficult to be a noncomformist, because there’s no one really there to help support you and push you towards your goals. So, it feels as if everything is just an uphill battle that you’re not likely to win.

2. The top five qualities I admire in others are courage, kindness, honesty, leadership, and responsibility. I admire courage, honesty, and responsibility because if you truly have these qualities, that means you aren’t afraid to back down from anything. It means you can accept the result of anything you’ve ever done and own up to it, and be willing to do something others might not be willing to do. Additionally, I admire leadership and kindness because both of these traits positively influence others. They help others go down the right path and make the right decisions, so that they can have these qualities as well and help others.

1- The first quote thematically suggests that education is more valuable than materialistic goals. That is because education lasts forever and materialistic things can be taken away at any moment. Education cannot be taken away because even if you get hurt, because it’s all up in your brain. Additionally, education can affect more people in positive ways. Therefore, knowledge and education is more valuable than materialistic goals or objects.

2- The second quote thematically suggests that you have to search for the deeper meaning to truly be able to understand. One cannot just comprehend the superficial meaning, they have to understand everything behind it. That’s how one can truly understand and achieve knowledge of something. Not by understanding the basic meaning. But, comprehending the full picture.

In Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam Jr., Sonny’s idea of family is just the group of people he is living with, not much more. Sonny’s feelings about family are pretty distant compared to the general population’s idea. It is clear in the book that he does not have a great relationship with his family, especially his dad and his brother. So, because of these distant relationships, Sonny cannot truly grasp the complete meaning of family. For example, when Sonny’s mom sat down next to him on the porch of their house and embraced him after he brought up his father, he thought, “It had been a long time since she’d hugged me. We just didn’t do much of that kind of thing in my family”(43). The fact that Sonny jumps at the touch of his own mother goes to show how divided his family is. To go along with that, Sonny’s mother is the one in his family that is actually the closest to him. Therefore, he must be extremely distant from his father and brother. Additionally, when Sonny’s father dumps and gets rid of all of Sonny’s rocket materials, and learns that Mr. Bykovski is the one who helped him, Sonny goes to Bykovski’s office where tells him that if “‘[He wants] to thank [him],’ [Bykovski] nodded towards the box, ‘Make these fly. Show your dad what you and I did together’”(97). It is clear from this quote that Sonny is much closer with Bykovski than his own father. His father has told him to stop pursuing his passion, while Bykovski continues to encourage him, like a true father figure. That goes to show how Sonny’s idea of family is the people he is living with and is dictated by, not those he is closest with or loves.
