To avenge his "honor" Southern Representative Preston S. Brooks beat Senator Sumner senselessly with his cane in the halls of Congress. He went to Harpers Ferry with over a dozen men, his plan being to raid for arms, then continue along the south recruiting slaves for the rebellion as he went. This plan was quickly cut sort, as he was quickly apprehended by the local authorities. He was then tried and sentenced to death.

This was significant as it showed the rising tension about slavery in America, with abolitionists now using violent means to get their way. He was then taken to a free state, Illinois, as well as a free territory, Wisconsin. When returning back to Missouri, Dred then sued John as he believed that himself residing in a free state ought to then make him free. The case reached the Supreme Court which then ruled that African Americans could actually never truly be citizens, and additionally that the anti-slavery Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional.

This was significant as the decision furthered the upset of abolitionists and other anti-slavery people, and the other regulations the court put into effect only added to the pile of unfair and unjust racial treatment in America.
