During WWII in Denmark, young Anett's family hides a Jewish mother and son in their cellar. As Nazi soldiers patrol the town, Anett gathers community support to help the family escape. Whisper by whisper, the neighbors guide the refugees to safety in the darkness toward a boat bound for Sweden.

Anett and her neighbors don't fight the Nazi's with weapons. They use whispering and teamwork to help a Jewish family escape. It shows that peaceful actions can make a big difference, even during a scary time like the Holocaust.

"They Whisper to each other- one house to the next- to keep the family safe."

I think this book does a great job of showing young readers how bravery can be quiet and kind. The whispering is a symbol of how people can help others without being loud or violent. It really fits the award's goals of peace, justice, and community.

Jane Addams Peace Association.
