I read this ‘classic’ book last summer and surprisingly I enjoyed it. In the first 100 pages I treated the story as an exercise to learn new vocabulary and read outside of my comfort zone but from 120 or so on I found myself invested in the story and relating to the heroine. While James’ writing was sometimes inaccessible I think it is a good book and I had fun reading it.

Abby O’Kane

Additionally, our generation might not be interested in the subjects of older stories or maybe the way in which we speak now vs. back then might affect your ability to understand the text well.

-Cooper Anderson

I’ve only read a couple of old and classics books. What I’ve found is that it’s less appealing to read books that you don’t relate too because it makes it harder to understand them. When the language and idioms are different than they are now, or the specific problems characters are facing you don’t fully understand, it’s like looking at the plot through a window vs a mirror. What would solve this problem for people is just to try to understand and learn more about these ideas, which is why as you get older it’s more enjoyable to read older and classic books

If old is defined as before cars, then there are only a few books I have read of that era. One of the books that is definitely pre-cars is “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu. My mother and I also read “Charlotte’s Web” when I was about 8. However, some old books are relatively difficult to read if you don’t have a good word reference handy. This is probably one of the main reasons that “Old” books are such a turnoff to younger generations. I too prefer books that aren’t from more than a century ago. It’s not the fault of the author, it was just written in a different time. However, there are plenty of good “Old” books to chose from and I wouldn’t be opposed to reading them.
