Challenges that lead to recidivism.

There are many challenges that lead people back to active addiction and the behaviors that accompany it. Among those challenges are stress management, lack of confidence in their personal worth, and economic limitations due to their past.

For many people who have spent a long time in active addiction, their ability to handle or manage stress become almost nonexistent. A lot of times their chemical habits become a substitute for any stressors that arise in their lives.

Self esteem and self worth are typically issues that people in recovery have issues with. Whether it’s the lack of personal accomplishments that occurred while they were in active addiction or the belief that their past actions can define them, it’s a barrier to them finding a way to move forward with their lives.

Almost all people in recovery have had to deal with one person or another who will judge them by their past. It’s part of the situation. This is more than evidently true in term of employment. Regardless of if someone has a criminal record, they will still more than likely meet those with a negative opinion of people in recovery. This further limits the opportunities that people might be able to encounter. That builds on top of the usual lack of education, work history, and/or skill building which is present with people who have experienced long term active addiction.

We want to help the participants face these issues head on. Building from smaller to greater responsibilities in their garden work, provides them with an opportunity to test themselves without the results creating a significant negative impact on their lives. Along side those responsibilities each participate will have the opportunity to grow their own food. This gives them a physical representation of their hardships, efforts, and achievement while participating in the program. Something that they can be proud of. Something that they can brag about to their friends and family. Beyond these we know that people will ultimately need income to finance their lives. For this we want to help our participants with real world opportunities that can help them to find a path that will bring them dignity and independence. Working with programs across the state to help them find educational opportunities, probationary work, or even help getting their own businesses started. Providing pathways for the participants to decide their own futures.

The initial step in the program is to help participants gain perspective, analyze themselves, build a foundation, and begin learning to prepare for the future.

To start with we will have participants learn to see their surroundings, find the successes, find what is lacking, come to understand how things are organized and controlled.

This curriculum will help participants look back at their past, deal with their choices, and try to understand what drove those choices.

They will come to understand what they need in their lives to find dignity, security, and self worth. What things will help support a life like that.

Finally they will learn how to start building a future through their hands on agriculture programming. This will build life skills, teach researching and decision making processes, help to understanding planning and setting goals, and the gratification of the rewards of hard work.
