Understanding and thinking about what is read.
This means being able to explain the story, describe characters, and talk about what happened in the text.

Example:
Answering questions like:
“What happened in the story?” or “Why did the character make that choice?”

Help your child think about what the book might be about.

• What do you notice on the cover?
• Have you ever heard a story like this before?

📖 During Reading

Encourage your child to think about the story as it happens.

• What do you think will happen next?
• Why do you think the character did that?
• How do you think the character feels right now?
• What would you do if you were in this situation?

💬 After Reading

Help your child reflect and make connections.

• What was your favorite part of the story?
• Who was your favorite character? Why?
• What lesson do you think the story teaches?
• Does this story remind you of something in real life?

There are no wrong answers when talking about a book. The goal is to encourage children to think, imagine, and share their ideas.

Ask your child to:
• Read food labels
• Help write the shopping list
• Find items that start with certain letters

This builds vocabulary and letter recognition.

🍳 While Cooking

Let your child:
• Read recipes
• Measure ingredients
• Follow directions step by step

This builds reading comprehension and sequencing skills.
