There are big changes to the program that will impact those you serve and support. Quick action may be needed to protect their coverage. We welcome your help to amplify this message and your ideas to mitigate the loss of coverage from any eligible individuals and families.

Before the federal budget bill, Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWDs) referred to adults ages 18-54 years old, who had no disabilities and no children under 18 living at home. Veterans, youth aging out of foster care, and people who were homeless were exempted from this designation.

The federal budget bill (H.R. 1) changed the definition of ABAWD, dramatically increasing the number of people who must meet or seek an exemption from work requirements. The new definition includes people ages 55-64 years old with no disabilities and people with children at home who are only 14 years or older and does away with the previous exemptions for people who are homeless, Veterans, and youth aging out of foster care.

As a result of new federal policy, on February 1, 2026, ABAWDs who do not meet or who are not exempt from work requirements may only receive SNAP benefits for 3 months in a 3-year period before losing eligibility. In Illinois, the current 3-year period ends December 31, 2026.

That means beginning May 1, 2026, ABAWDs who do not meet or who are not exempt from work requirements could lose benefits.

• SNAP customers can use the ABE: SNAP Work Requirements screener to see if they are subject to, are meeting, or may be eligible to seek an exemption from work requirements.

• IDHS will also continue to provide updates with customers and the general public through a variety of channels, including Facebook, LinkedIn, and our website: snapfederalimpact.illinois.gov

CHA’s Summer Youth Employment Program gives young people a chance to work and earn money for six to eight weeks. It usually starts in June and goes until early August. Participants can work up to 20 hours each week.

The Parlor is a resource redistribution project by Trash People, based in Logan Square.

On Saturday August 15, we'll be hosting a free resource pop-up for local teachers to swing by and pick up items that you or your students might need. From office basics to art supplies, we'd love to help make the upcoming term a little easier.

Items are available on a first-come-first-served basis, so we recommend arriving early. Please bring your teacher ID. Entrance will be through the big rainbow doors at the corner of Kimball & Wrightwood.

This event will be held inside, and will proceed regardless of weather. However, please register your attendance for free to receive updates in case of any event changes.

How do we make mental health care more accessible and make sure the services available in our communities actually reflect what residents need?

That is the question the Coalition to Save Our Mental Health Centers has been answering for decades.

Join us on Saturday, August 29th from 1–4 PM at LoSAH Center of Hope / Centro de Esperanza for an afternoon of connection, programming, and community-powered action in support of expanding access to mental health services in Chicago.

This gathering is for neighbors, young professionals, emerging organizers, families, future volunteers, donors, and anyone who wants to learn how to get more involved in building stronger, healthier, more connected communities.

The Coalition’s work is rooted in a powerful idea that communities should have real authority over the care, resources, and services brought to them.

Through Expanded Mental Health Services Programs (EMHSPs), Chicago residents can organize, vote, fund, and oversee community mental health centers designed around local needs. This model helps put decision-making power back into the hands of the people most impacted. This is community power in action.

Programming for this event will include:

A panel with organizers
Games and activities
Crafts
Opportunities to meet neighbors and like-minded people
Ways to learn how you can get involved locally

The primary purpose of the afternoon is simple: to bring people together.

Come and meet people who care about mental health access, public care, local democracy, and community-led solutions. Learn how the Coalition’s model works.
