- 6th + 7th grade both focus on writing argument w/ clear and relevant supporting claims
-After learning the basic techniques narrative writing in 5th grade, 6th graders start exploring relevant descriptive details + well-structured event sequences
-6th grade focuses on beginning to write formally and building on previously learned techniques
-5th grade seems really foundational for 6th grade and gaps in learning could make meeting 6th grade standards difficult.
-Predictable problems: completely new material, could be overwhelming for students
- a lot of overlap between 6th + 7th grade standards

In 8th grade, they should come into 9th grade knowing how to read something and write about it and create sound arguments from the texts instead of just out of thin air.
In 9th/10th, the focus is more on organization and flow as well as development of counter claims. They should know how to write an argumentative essay in its most basic form.
In 11th/12th, the basics formed in the previous grades become more finessed. There are not specific requirements as much as the focus is just on creating upper level arguments and better cohesion. In the upper level classes, you also spend more time with creative writing.
Some problems would be that the requirements are pretty similar throughout, so you can easily get stuck doing the same thing each year.
