In 1971 publisher McGraw-Hill really thought that the intel that he got from Clifford Irving was factual. Clifford convinced Hill that he really worked hand in hand with Hughes to bring his story to the public's eye. While Clifford's whole operation was going on, people thought that the money was going to the rightful owner of the story (Hughes) but instead Clifford was swindling 750,000 from the company.

McGraw hill hired experts to examine letters that were supposedly written by Hughes. They determined that the handwriting could be Hughes, but they weren't too sure since the forgery was too good. The experts had to get a government subpoena to force Irving to turn over samples of his handwriting. Clifford's handwriting was different from Hughes, but the habits and other details were similar. On March 30th, 1972, Clifford admitted that he forged the letters and billionaire's autobiography.
