Between the Reformed Church and the Roman Catholic Church

The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit: Despite the slight differences in beliefs between the Reformed Church and the Catholic Church, they share many similarities. For example, both believe in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Additionally, the begin and end each prayer with the sign of the cross. The sign of the cross represents this belief in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. “The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity. Though really distinct, as a Person, from the Father and the Son, He is consubstantial with Them; being God like Them, He possesses with Them one and the same Divine Essence or Nature” (Catholic Central).

The Lord is the giver of life:
From religion to religion, the belief of who is the giver or creator of life varies. Some believe in more than one being or gods, but Christianity as a whole is a monotheistic religion. This means that we believe in one, and only one, true God. The Lord, which both the Reformed and Catholic Church believes in, is the creator and giver of life. “The Holy Spirit is referred to as the Lord and Giver of Life in the Nicene creed. He is the Creator Spirit, present before the creation of the universe and through his power everything was made in Jesus Christ, by God the Father” (Catholic Encyclopedia).

1. Calvin's answer was that we cannot make that judgment against God. Whatever God does is, by definition, just. Catholic opposition forced Calvin to move to Geneva where his group established a theocracy, a state based on God's law. John Calvin was one of the leaders who was noted for his emphasis on God’s sovereignty and predestination. Calvin declared that even before God created the world, He decreed who would be saved and who would be damned. This was termed “double predestination” (journalNow.com) .

2. He rejected the Roman Catholic belief that Mary acts as a mediator between man and God as idolatry, since only Christ can fulfill this role. Calvin forbade prayers and supplications to Mary for the same reason, further arguing that praying to the dead is not a practice supported by Scripture. Calvin rejected calling Mary the "mother of God," saying, "I cannot think such language either right, or becoming, or suitable. ... To call the Virgin Mary the mother of God can only serve to confirm the ignorant in their superstitions” (Catholic.org). John Calvin is known for his influential Institutes of the Christian Religion (1536), which was the first systematic theological treatise of the reform movement. He stressed the doctrine of predestination, and his interpretations of Christian teachings, known as Calvinism, are characteristic of Reformed churches.

3. Calvinism teaches that we are justified by faith apart from works but that once we believe with true faith we necessarily do good works as a result. Catholicism teaches that we are justified by faith and by the good works that flow from that faith. The Roman Catholic Counsel of Trent anathematized this Calvinistic view. Roman Catholics teach that the Roman Catholic Church is the only true church, and that the pope is the supreme authority over the church, having received his authority by direct apostolic succession from Peter. “Calvinists teach that there is no such thing as apostolic succession which hands such authority down from person to person, and that there is no single visible entity or church which may be indentified as the true church” (thirdmill.org).
