Lyme disease is a bacterial infection most often caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. The disease is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks or deer ticks, which often become infected with the bacterium after feeding on deer, mice, or birds. In the United States, infected ticks are commonly found in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Upper Midwest regions. The Pacific coast, particularly Northern California, is also home to Lyme disease vectors.
