They were named after the native Americans and therefor they had an influence on the English language. Later on the Dutch, Germans and Italians came along as immigrants and contributed to develope the English vocabulary with new kinds of words they used in their home country. 2000 new words and phrases was invented by Shakespeare. Examples: "eyeball", "puppydog", "dauntless" (fearless), "alligator" (ran out of rhymes with "crocodile"), "hobnob" (biscuit you dip in the tea) and "anchovy" (ansjoser).

Invented new "catchphrases", that was often used later (ordsprog), som fx 
"to eat our flesh and blood out house and home" (at spise nogen ud af huset)
"To say good riddance to the green-eyed monster" (at være grøn af misundelse)
"Breaking the ice" (at bryde isen)
"To be as dead as a door nail (at være stendød)

They don’t speak a lot of latin anymore, but prefer to speak Saxon in their daily life, because it is easier. By this time, there are no words for Saturday, Sunday and Monday. 
In 597, Christian missionaries come to England, and christianity expand the language with religious vocabulary from latin such as ‘marthyr’ and ‘bishop’. 
Around year 800, the vikings come to England to rob and rape!! But they also add 2000 new words to the English vocabulary. King James got the bible translated into english in 1611, so that every person in britain could read it, even the poor ones. In this translation there were a lot of new metaphors, phrases and expressions that are still being used today.Examples of these are “one bird in the hand is worth ten in the bush” or “A leopard cannot change its spots”.

By this take over the English language take on a lot of French words such as judge, jury, evidence and justice. The French also brought books such as the Domesday Book with them, and implemented in England. The Domesday book is a book on the French Tax-system. 
Latin was still used in church but the average person spoke English. All in all the English language took about 10.000 new words from the French language. The English took words like Pork, beef, loin and so on. This chapter is about how the language in the 17th hundred were heavily influenced by scientist, physicists and an very academic language, since there were many scientific breakthroughs. But the people could not catch up with the ‘’the royal society’’ (Robert x2 +Isaac) and their latin. Even among each other when they met to discuss and exchange their scientific discoveries or inventions, they could not understand each other. So in order to be able to educate the population probably, a common language had to be invented. This era is also named ‘’The Age of Enlightenment’’, since the general public started showing interest in physics, including for instance sexual-education. Therefore there was a great need for having a common language so everyone could understand each other, when talking about science. 

In the chapter three important people were mentioned:
Robert Boyle (1627-1691), who was an irish-english philosopher, chemist and physicist 
Robert Hooke (1635- 1703), who was an english scientist
Isaac Newton (1643 - 1727), who discovered the laws of gravity.

Some of the words that were invented in the age of enlightenment include:

  • electricity 
  • pendulum 
The vocabulary regarding the human body expanded as well, which led to these words invention:
  • cardiac  
  • tonsil
  • ovary 
  • sternum 
  • penis
  • vagina

  • Cannibal (1550). 

In India they discovered: 
  • Yoga(1820)
  • Cummerbund( 1610)
- Tuxedo belt
  • Crimson(1500) 
-  Color
  • Bungalow(1670). 
- Type of building

In Africa they took words such as:
  • Voodoo(1850)
  • Zombie(1871).

In Australia they took the words:
  • Nugget(1852)
  • Boomerang(1827)
  • Walkabout(1828). 
- a rite of passage

Between the Napoleon and the First World War the British empire expanded with nearly ten million Square miles, 400 hundred million people. This left the English language to develop all over the world, and to create different versions.

    • As the English language began to expand, there was a need to write down the words in order to control the language. The so-called lexicographers, who were people who wrote and edited the dictionaries made an agreement on the definitions of the words and how they should be spelled. 
     Dr. Johnson used nine years to write a dictionary that ended up having 42.773 words. As time went on new words were invented and the language expanded further. The dictionary was quickly outdated. In 1857 they began writing the Oxford English Dictionary and they were finished in 1928. Ever since, they have continuously added new words and erased the outdated ones.

It has grown overseas and through the internet and has since then had a big impact on other languages. Later on the language became a "vacation language", and is now used to communicate with people from all around the world. Now about 1.5 billion people speaks English, of these about a quarter are native speakers, a quarter speak it as a second language and a half can ask for directions.     - 1972 the first email was sent, shortly after the internet arrived (1991). Suddenly people were able to communicate to each other across the world. After this people started using slang and shortenings when writing emails to save time. Soon people adopted this to their spoken language. Suddenly LOL meant 'laughing out loud' and also 'lots of love'. 
    Conversations were getting shorter than the average attention span. 
    Before the internet came the language developed when people spoke to each other, but now the language changes trough out the communication on the internet.
