Today I learned about the history of slavery in Guadeloupe during our visit to the museum. What stuck in my memory most was the wall with inscriptions like: “Colored people must sit on the balcony”.

Walking through the city, we explored four aspects of cultural heritage: food, language, music, and traditional crafts. I learned that cultural heritage is around us and it is easy to find it, we just don’t pay much attention on it in daily life.

This is a short pragraph from the both of us (Mary Lou and Michaela), because we are team teachers and in the school we teach the same subjects, so we agree in everything:

Today we learned:

- that creole food is a delicious and spicy way of showing the variety of all food from the island

- that craftmanship is part of the culture of Guadeloupe, for example hats

- that music is a living expression of the history and diversity of this Caribbean archipelago

- we met a „Gwada“, she told us that people of Guadeloupe call their own country in Creol language „Gwadloupe“

Today I learned the Creole way of writing Guadeloupe (Gwadloup). I also learned about the Tree of Forgetfulness. In de museum I found out that the festive gathering of slaves in the same region was the beginning of carnaval. The last thing today was the drink made of ambarella fruit. I didn't know that fruit, but now I know that it's a tasty drink (but you can better not eat the fruit).

Today I learned to be more aware of the things around me, in relation to different kinds of intangible heritage. We went for a culture hunt in Point-à-Pitre. I knew the city already a bit from last year, but this culture hunt made me look in another way to everything that was there. The market, foods, (street)arts, people, music, and so on.

Also, I’m trying to speak as much French to the people as I can and I’m learning new words and sentences everyday. Willem is a very good teacher (not only in history!). Next time in Guadeloupe I’m fluent for sure…

Also I really like speaking with Lisa about her studies and Erasmus+ journeys in Bulgaria and Guadeloupe. I thought the Lithuanian and Latvian language were the same, but it’s not.

Today I learned that scaravature plays a significant role in the lives of the families in Guadalupe, deeply influencing their traditions and daily routines. This element, whether cultural, spiritual, or symbolic, weaves itself into their community practices, strengthening bonds and preserving heritage. Through rituals, stories, or shared experiences, the scaravature remains a vital part of their identity, connecting generations and enriching their way of life.

It was a citation from the museum, but I find it important speaking not only about slavery, but also about our history, culture, crafts, language. We are all responsible for what our future generations will have.

It was shocking to see numbers of modern slavery and to understand that it’s not only history but also nowadays we can’t stop it. And the tree of forgetfulness was the inspiration.

Also experience in local creole restaurant was amazing.
