A young couple (Jack and Jill) on a date night decide to spend the night in watching a movie, but finding the perfect movie to watch is not as easy as it seems.

 

Jack wants everything to be perfect and is determined to find the perfect movie on Netflix to watch. He over analyses every possible option by trying to determine the best movie genre, looking up reviews, asking friends on social media their opinion, and watching trailers. This then drives his girlfriend Jill crazy as she would much rather just pick a movie at random that both of them had not seen before and try something completely new with no input form anyone else. 

 

Jack (protagonist) is a young IT professional in his late 20’s to early 30’s living in the city. He is highly analytical, dresses well, likes things to be neat and tidy, and loves technology and gadgets and often classes himself as bit of geek. 

 

Jill is Jacks girlfriend she is in her late 20’s- early 30’s she is a bit of a romantic, messy, takes life as it comes, doesn’t like to rely on plans and would rather leave things to chance. 

 

Jack invites his girlfriend Jill over to spend a night in watching a movie he wants this night to be perfect and this includes deciding on the perfect movie to watch on Netflix. With so many different choices and different forms of technology to help him analyse the options to find the perfect movie results in a not so perfect date night. 

 

The difference in personalities creates contrast, Jack needs to analyze everything and for everything to be perfect. Jill doesn’t like to analyze and wants to just take a chance on the unknown. Contrast will also be shown in the way the characters dress as Jack is neat and tidy and dresses in neutral colours, while Jill is a bit messy and dresses in a colourful more bohemian style. 

 

The difference in personalities also creates conflict. With Jack needing to analyze everything and picking the perfect option is important to him clashes with Jill that would rather take a chance on the unknown and try watching something new that they have never heard of before.  

The story will be set at Jacks apartment a typical inner city apartment with Jack being very neat the apartment is a reflection of him, neat, unassuming, welcoming, warm and cosy. 

 

While taking the quiz I was able to identify my weaknesses and the areas that I will need to work on further being the questions regarding the lens and the iris. These were question 5 (which lens will give a small or shallow depth of field) and question 7 (How do you achieve a shallow depth of field on your camera). 

 

While taking the quiz I also found that my strengths were questions on focus, colour temperature and knowing what type of light sources will record and show as what colour on screen.

The CNet review was dated 5 October 2010 which suggests that this camera is now somewhat dated in terms of technology. However, at the time of writing, the camera was top of the line for video making. The camera offered manual focus and 1980 x 1080 pixel HD video. Based on the CNet review, this is an ideal camera to utilize for the project.

The techradar.com review was also dated 2010, and also identified the HD movie making of the camera as a real benefit. It did note that the camera didn’t feel as slick as its rivals. There was nothing specific here so it was very difficult to understand how I should react to the negative component of the review.

The PCAuthority was dated 2010 so was again an older review. The general review for the video capabilities of the camera were positive, as it spoke of high definition and high pixel rates compared to its rivals at the time. The review does mention that the autofocus is inaccurate and hunts poorly. Therefore, it is important that I manually focus for my movie making work. The review also mentioned that there is no in body image stabilization, and so a tripod will be important to use when filming.

Based on these reviews, while my camera is an older model, it was a high end model at the time and as such, will be able to provide a suitable camera for the course, provided I am aware of the limitations of utilizing a tripod and manual focus. My own observation is that the camera does not have a manual zoom, and so I need a lens to be able to do any form of zooming. 

 

Kenrockwell - https://kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/18-200mm.htm, viewed 12/04/18

The Ken Rockwell review stated that the camera has a huge zoom range.  Equally, the lens had an excellent image stabilization mechanism in built that was not noted to be clunky in any way. However, the manual focus ring was very small, with only a 1/8^th turn to cover all eventualities. As such, the reviewer found it difficult to manually focus. Equally, the lens would not manually focus in auto mode, and so I will need to be careful to ensure that the autofocus is turned off at all times. Overall, the reviewer liked the lens. As such, I believe that this lens will be suitable for the course, provided I am aware of the focus limitations.

 

There were no formal reviews of the Unomat tripod easily found on Google. However, there were a number of forum discussions that gave an insight into the usefulness of the product. This is a reasonably good way to obtain information as camera enthusiasts share information with each other without an agenda.

The discussion on this forum suggested that the tripod was a good tripod to use, with a weakness being that the legs worked loose over time. The discussion then offered a solution of having a small key at hand to tighten as needed. This is good advice as it suggests that the brand is a solid brand to use, identifies a weakness but then provides a solution to this weakness. As such I can conclude that the tripod is suitable for the project.

 

I propose to use my IPhone 6 as a sound recording device.

This review suggests that using an IPhone with the correct app will provide a much higher quality sound recording than using the camera to record sound. The limitation is that the sound will need to be synched to the video during post production which could result in problems if not done properly. Equally, my subjects will need to carry the IPhone around with them and have microphone attached (hidden) to the lapel and then linked to the phone.

This review suggests that ITalk, a program that will utilize the sound recording capability of my IPhone, is a good program to use. The review suggests that it is simple to use and can synch easily with my computer. I believe that this app will be of use to me through this project.

This app is another I will look to use for this project. The review suggests that the app is very easy to use and provides high quality output. However, the limitation is that the app does not offer much editing interface and so I will need to synch this to my computer and link during postproduction.
