It's deeply concerning that even relatively small pipelines can leak massive amounts of oil products in these brief periods of time. The Enbridge 5 pipeline, running through the Mackinac Straits (a fragile environment), is capable of carrying 86,000 cubic meters of oil per day. What if that burst? Scary. -ryan

Concerning
that they aren't 100% certain on which pipes the leaks could be coming from...makes it hard for companies to pay for their mistakes if you don't know which company to blame. They should have a better way to identify the pipe so the company can deal with or pay for the environmental damage they cause

The recovery effort so far for the 200,000 gallon oil leak has only recovered 170,000 while this is a vast majority of the oil that was recovered, the remaining 30,000 could still impact the environment in negative ways that could take years and lots of money to remediate

It's extremely worrisome that out of the 200,000 liters spilled only 170,000 have since been recovered. Furthermore there was also another spill in a nearby area just 7 months before this one where 250,000 liters were spilled except this time into a major river. These pipelines should not be used unless they have been engineered to be safer.

I think that this article did raise some uneasy feelings about the use of pipelines to transport oil, however, I would just like to know how much more or less devastating these spills are compared to the other methods of transporting oil like by boat or train
