The main Wikipedia page opens with "Welcome to Wikipedia" with the subtitle "the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit"; sourcing the 6 million + articles are written on the website via a hyperlink. Additionally, the homepage highlights a featured article (mine was about Rhea Seddon, an American surgeon and astronaut). It also features sections like "In the news" and "On this day."

I browsed the French Wikipedia page, and the content did not look too different from the English version. It starts with the same welcoming message, labeled article of the day, news (or current events), and a 'did you know' section. One of the main differences is the number of articles written in the French Wikipedia; compared to the English version with 6mil+ articles, the French version only has around 2.5mil written.

I automatically opted into TikTok using my off-app activity to help with ad targeting. According to Tiktok, "with this setting, the ads you see on TikTok can be more tailored to your interests based on data that advertising partners share with us about your activity on their apps and websites." I would prefer to have this as a yes/no option when creating an account rather than something that you are automatically opting in for; most people don't even realize that TikTok is gathering information about you off their platform.

What’s a feature that you wish you could have more control over? Why? 

While I enjoy Tiktok's personalized for you page (FYP), I find it somewhat unsettling how accurate the recommendations are. I could be talking about something with my friends, and 30 seconds later, a video will pop up about that specific topic on my FYP. I wish I had more control over what Tiktok recommends to me, and I would want more control over what information Tiktok has access to. For example, TikTok mentions in their advertising policies that they use information about your purchasing activities to determine which ads to promote to you. I prefer a way to block off these settings in order to cut down on information shared with platforms. 

One may think that the current trends are unaligned with the crises many face. These trends might seem superficial or 'silly' to the outside viewer; why would anyone care about $400 rubber boots when people around the globe are struggling with their daily lives?

There is a common theme of catastrophe in this packet. We are amidst a climate crisis and global recession, among much else. 

There is a left-leaning political bias in the content of my packet due to my own opinions of what is 'news-worthy' and 'important.' These opinions may be different from those from different political or cultural backgrounds. 

What was the quality of the output? 
The prompt for this output was "please write me an email prompt about other tenants leaving trash in the common areas and let landlords know that I will need them to take action ASAP"... this is a personal issue that I have been struggling with in my living environment and wanted to see how ChatGPT would approach an issue like this with little information given to it. It came back with a respectful yet urgent email informing the landlord about the issues and consequences of the litter in the building. 

Did you get what you wanted? 
Yes, ChatGPT gave me a rundown on why the litter poses many issues, including health issues. It also gives a rundown on why this is something the landlord should be responsible for. 

For someone less knowledgeable than you, is this a good starting point to know more?
Yes! It gives a very brief introduction to how to approach a landlord about  living condition issues 

The inputted prompt was "please rewrite the email to let the landlord that this is an issue that I have repeatedly reached out about and they haven't listened to me in the past. Make the tone more assertive and let them know the neighbors in the adjacent building have been leaving angry notes specifically about the cigarette butt litter."

Since this is a personal email, I didn't really learn anything NEW per say. However, it did give me ideas as to how to address this problem professionally without getting aggressive and annoyed. 

What made you think of the factors to refine and where can you trace that knowledge back to? 

I wanted to come up with a proper email that brings up specifics about the issues faced in the apartment while maintaining a professional tone.

I left the section about it being the landlords' responsibility to maintain the property's cleanliness and enforce rules. I added how the embarrassment about the litter is causing a lot of stress for my roommates and me to exacerbate the problems of the litter in the building. 

What surprised you the most about this experiment? 

I was surprised about how articulated chatGPT's responses are based on the limited information I provided it with. 

What are you concerned about or unimpressed with?

Based on the growing influence of AI, I'm generally concerned with the efficacy of AI-generated products and the lack of creativity and critical thinking that used to accompany writing emails, papers, etc. Using AI-powered websites is making it easier and faster to come up with answers, without requiring the research or thinking that used to be needed when writing/creating/solving.

The Dall-E creation prompt was to depict a "realistic city in 2084," and the resulting image portrays a heavily congested city, grey, and polluted city. Given the strong dependence of North America on the automotive industry, it is not surprising that the city's infrastructure is mainly built around highways. Furthermore, due to the prevalence of personal automobiles and the lack of walkability and public transportation, it can be inferred that carbon emissions are high, and the environmental condition is deteriorating.
