The author of seven bestselling novels, his interest in the creative arts took hold as a young man when he managed the kitchen at the Main Point nightclub in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and came into contact with luminaries of jazz and blues such as Chick Corea and Muddy Waters. During this time, he also developed literary interests including mystery novels by authors such as Dashiell Hammet and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
