The use of sounds is important in both visual and audio based media such as radio. Sound serves to inform, educate and entertain the audience for example; a documentary show would use narrative and a lot of informative dialogue to educate and inform the listeners. The documentary Planet Earth, which is presented by David Attenborough, uses narrative as a way of informing the viewers about what is happening in the show.

The Short film ‘Lovefield’ uses sound to entertain it's audience, it uses ambient sound throughout the film to add tension and trick the audience into thinking that the genre of the film is a horror rather than what it is actually about. To do this the sound of a crow squawking is used. This sound effect is usually associated with death or a warning that something bad that is about to happen. However, it turned out that this wasn’t the case and that the film is completely different to how it seemed.

Audio in media is split into two different categories these being diegetic and non-diegetic. Diegetic sound is audio that the characters in the film or production are able to hear, non-diegetic sound is audio that the characters in the film are not able to hear but the audience can. Incidental music is an example of non-diegetic sound, music would be added in during the editing process over a scene in a film. The purpose of incidental music is to emphasise the on-screen emotions and actions.

This scene from 500 days of summer is an example of incidental music in films. This certain song has been specifically chosen to enhance how happy the character is, due to the fact that it is a happy upbeat song. Without the use of the music in this scene the character would still look happy due to the what you can see on screen however the added sound track enhances it.

Incidental music is also used a lot in horror films to build tension without the audience knowing it. Because the audience is concentrating on what is happening on screen they aren’t aware of the music in the background that is enhancing how scared they are.

This Audio drama is an example of how important ambient sound is in a production. The drama starts off with the men almost whispering to each other that someone is behind them and they need to be quiet. They seem to have a sense of panic to their voices which immediately adds tension to what the audience can hear. Throughout the audio there is constant background noise of guns, explosions and bullet shells hitting the ground, you can also hear the sound of the gas being released. Not only do all these sound effects add to the imagery created by the audio but they also help the audience identify the setting and the genre of this production. Without the ambient sound effects in this audio drama there wouldn’t be as much tension, it would just sound like people talking to each other so the sounds of the guns etc engages the audience more.

Ambient sound is another type of audio in media, ambient sounds are sound effects that add to the atmosphere of the production, such as trees blowing in the wind or animal noises. It's main purpose it to help create the setting, making sure nothing is left out. If it was a production on radio that was telling a story, the use of ambient sound would be important because it helps the audience create a visual image of what they’re hearing. It’s a diegetic sound element as the characters in the film are able to hear it.

Sound effects are another type of sound used in media, sound effects are added to a media production to mimic and add sound to something that is happening on screen. For example if there is a door slamming on screen then a sound effect will be added to match this. Without the use of sound effects in a production the final thing would sound unfinished and like it was missing something. Sound effect can be created by recording things from the direct cause such as a door slam or a gunshot or they can be created by a foley artist in a studio. A foley artist would use different objects to create a certain sound effect, for example if a scene involved bones breaking this sound could be created by recording the sound of celery being snapped.

Sound effects are fundamental in video games, without them the player would have to rely on the visual only to know what’s going on, adding sound effects make the game more realistic and exciting to play. In this clip from Grand Theft Auto you see that every sound effect that has been added is synchronous sound, every sound that you hear matches with what you see on screen. Grand Theft auto is well known for it's attention to detail when adding sound into their productions as it makes the gameplay more enjoyable for players.

Because the song was originally created in 1963 the first theme tune heavily relied on the saxophone as that was popular at the time, in 1978 another Pink Panther film was released, the opening sequence for this had more of a disco sound to it as this was the popular style of music in the late 1970’s.

Dialogue in media is any talking or conversation between characters. Dialogue can be recorded during the filming on set, this is called production dialogue. In animated media any talking would be recorded before or after the final product is created as there isn’t any actual filming involved, the actors usually have to imagine how the character will sound and look based on the script as they wouldn’t have seen the animation before.

When recording vocals either a condenser mic or a dynamic mic will be used, a condenser microphone is a lot more crisp and captures every detail of the person's voice, however because of how detailed this microphone is it also catches a lot of room noise, this is prevented by using a soundproof room to do the recording in. A dynamic mic isn’t a sensitive condenser mic so it doesn’t catch as much background noise but this means isn’t as crisp as the other mic.

In this example from Little miss Sunshine whilst the car is driving on the motorway you hear the background noise of the cars beeping, without this sound the scene would seem quite dull. This sound could possibly have been created by recording different beeps are repeating them or possibly recording the sound by standing near a motorway.
