As the numbers indicate, communications experts have yet to make significant inroads into the boardroom. This scarcity is due in part to the daunting fact that so few seats become available every year, but there’s also the belief that communication skills while valuable aren’t enough on their own to contribute significantly to a board’s larger mandate. However, our increasingly digitized world and the growing presence of both consumer and investor activism is elevating reputational issues to the board level, opening the door for communications leaders with the proven ability to contribute to wider business, governance and value creation matters

Beyond the numbers, CCOs and communication experts simply haven’t been topping of mind when board seats become available. Fairly or not, the field of communications has been painted as a “softer” skill like the way HR was viewed in previous decades and therefore not as crucial to a board’s mandate. Certain communicators can add tremendous value to the boardroom because of the way they look at the business, but they’ve gotten there because they’ve become accomplished businesspeople first and foremost

It seems inevitable that CCOs will eventually be in greater numbers within Fortune 500 boardrooms, notes Lisa Caputo, who sits on the board of Best Buy and is executive vice president and chief marketing and communications officer for The Travelers Companies. Caputo oversees several functional areas, including marketing, communications, customer experience, research, and creative services.

“It’s definitely becoming more commonplace today to discuss bringing communications expertise in the boardroom. Over time, we will come to the day when communications are going to stand on its own merits in board consideration because it’s a volatile landscape out there. When you see what’s going on around the country with issues such as cyber security and data breaches, these are crisis communication issues that link directly to reputation and brand management. You need communications expertise to forge through these issues.”

Management teams typically handle logistical operations, which are often beneath the bigger-picture perspective of boards. That also applies to crisis management, which is more of an operating issue. However, it’s worth noting that communications expertise on its own can be valuable to boards. Communications experts themselves recognize that it is their broader business skills that open the door to boardroom service. “Certain communicators can add tremendous value to the boardroom because of the way they look at the business, but they’ve gotten there because they’ve become accomplished businesspeople.

The article indicates that communication experts isn't usually high on the list of priorities to fill board vacancies. The head of communication is typically not their target, which explains why few CCOs serve on corporate boards. it is believed that communication skills aren't just enough on their own to contribute to the board's larger mandate. More than just business-acumen real life experience leading a major transformation is needed. But with changing times and with the social media becoming ubiquitous, the stakes for corporations to make communication officer an important member of the executive team is higher. The speed and immediacy of digital communication will thus open doors for CCO's expertise in the boardroom.

This article indicates that communication competence is usually not high on the priority list; if boards look to fill positions, governance requirements need competence in various fields, and communications typically are not recognized as a unique field. Communications professionals, therefore, need to be able to take a broader view of the company and provide insight into areas like strategy, finance, governance, and beyond. A profound commercial acumen alone is still not sufficient for the interest of aboard — a candidate must also contribute an immaterial aspect. Digital and social media have grown omnipresent, and companies' stakes have increased. There is countless potential to exploit new areas, open up new markets and develop new goods and business lines. The velocity and power of information transportation make it complicated than ever to preserve reputation and market worth. Digital and social media have grown omnipresent, and companies' stakes have increased. There is countless potential to exploit new areas, open up new markets and develop new goods and business lines. The velocity and power of information transportation make it complicated than ever to preserve reputation and market worth. This is why The Chief Communications Officer (CCO) has become a growing element of the management team. A skilled CCO brings media ability, interprets, and evaluates market input, takes advantage of new chances, and sharply navigates catastrophes. These managers work to quiet an irritating public, soothe jittery investors, develop links with lawmakers and shape important media stories. In unpredictable surroundings, both can slide downward at incredible speeds. They understand how to maintain – and expand – the reputation and market values.

Although companies are careful not to do or say anything improper, they also compete for the attention of their customers. They strive for new and innovative methods to break the noise with their message of why they matter and why they value them. As their competitors struggle to get a share of mind and market share, they are ready to challenge them. It is not surprising that the position of the CCO is still evolving. From my viewpoint, the health and prosperity of a company were never more crucial. The role is not only to attract attention and provide the Company with favourable media publicity. The person must promote and defend the reputation of the brand. Protection takes precedence above promotion in today's high-stakes, fighting environment. The CCO has extended its responsibilities to encompass non-traditional media and a more direct consumer relationship. The relevance of culture and mission as clients are based on standards that go far further than features and prices have been emphasized.

In the last several years, the functions and responsibilities of CCOs have significantly evolved inside the companies. In addition, they are currently regarded as one of the most significant strategic partners of companies. As previously demonstrated, communication specialists provide business continuity and drive company success. While many businesses have had to learn how to include business communication into critical corporate strategies, many have already acknowledged the necessity of communication to have a beneficial effect on corporate performance. The communications department's long-term success and future contribution to corporate understanding is the responsibility of CCOs. Strategic communicators may exploit the development of digital communication and uncover workplace innovation potentials to help the company flourish.

Moreover, The Chief Communications Officer has a vital responsibility to do with transparent and straightforward internal communication. Understanding the requirements, anxieties, expectations, and preferences of internal audiences allows firms to improve the total working experience and promote the success and productivity of workers. Further modifications in workplace regulations and crisis procedures might result in dissatisfaction and misunderstandings amongst employees and other stakeholders. This is particularly evident among frontline personnel who are challenging to reach who have not been assigned a job. CCOs are heavily responsible for crisis management and risk management and should give the top team sound advice about critical choices. They are responsible for educating and enlightening all employees and allowing managers to interact successfully with their teams.

The business world is rapidly transforming in this digitalized era. A company's reputation and brand image directly impact its success and failure. To manage such sensitive issues, communication experts are in high demand, and thus they are considered a key player in the executive team. Despite all these, only a few can make it to the corporate boards. The primary reason could be only a handful of seats get opened up every year, and the board usually prefers current or retired CEOs. However, this preference will change in the future as the business environment is becoming more volatile, and consumers are turning out to be more informed and bother about the company's reputation before they purchase. To address and manage this change, qualified CCOs will be in great demand for the board. Ambitious CCOs cannot restrict their skill to just communication only. They need to acquire more functional skills to stand out and prove valuable to the board by offering wisdom and effective advice.

The outbreak—and how brands responded—illustrates the importance of how businesses communicate with and inform stakeholders, maintain loyalty, and generate financial performance. In this article communication abilities are thought to be insufficient on their own to contribute to the board's greater purpose. Real-life experience directing a large transformation is required in addition to business expertise. However, as times change and social media becomes more prevalent, the stakes for firms to make a communication officer a vital member of the executive team have increased. As a result of the speed and immediacy of digital communication, CCO's knowledge will be more widely recognized in the boardroom.

There are few seats for CCO on the board team. The top management is more focused on a leader, or the CFO types who retired with rich experiences. It is believed that communication skills as a soft skill aren't just enough on their own to contribute to the board's larger mandate. One of the reasons for this is the high barrier to entry. Only a few corporate board spots open up every year. Another thing is that communications expertise is not enough to satisfy board requirements. Business leadership, expertise in a broad range, and the ability to look at the big picture is needed. I also learned that businesses are starting to consider reputational risk whereas before they were primarily concerned with financial and operational risk. This falls within the expertise of CCOs which will let them be of great value to the board. As digitalization and consumer activism increase, so will the importance of communication expertise and this will open up opportunities for CCOs to sit on boards.

Although Chief Communication Officers play a crucial role in preserving company reputation and market share, they face lesser company boardroom participation on the decision-making table. One major factor behind this is the low annual vacancy rate of only 7% on the board. Whenever a seat opens, it usually goes to a retired or current CEO. Previous board-based experience, financial expertise and legal expertise are greatly valued in an invitation to be a board member. Generally, communication is considered a soft skill and board invitations are given to people with functional and intangible skillset such as wisdom and advice-giving capability. That is why communication experts not only have to deal with communication itself but create market value alongside managing company reputation to stand out and get a seat today. Although, because of the changing social dynamic among millennials and increasing participation of consumers on social media, communication is soon going to stand on its own merits while it comes to board consideration. In the volatile landscape of maintaining company reputation, CCO’s can help shape the public opinion on the company through strategic planning. In the new world of investor activism, reputational issues matter to the board significantly and that’s why CCO’s should be valued more.
