He was a Peruvian leader who fought against the Spanish in Peru. Both him and his wife were captured by the Spaniards and were put to death. This occurred around the mid 1800's. He later joined a rebellion in Italy, and was captured countless times. Juan was the first president of Ecuador and fought in the military. He led for three non-consecutive terms and had an impact on Ecuador's government. The people of Sicily demanded independence through a new constitution, and no one would agree on anything. The process of unification started in 1848, and ended in 1871. This quickly changed however, when the War of Independence occurred. Peru held out against Bulevar longer than most, but then a republic was formed that sent troops to Peru, and one became dictator. Raising the flag symbolizes freedom and honoring the patriots who fought to win Ecuador's independence. The Ecuadorian war started and ended in the beginning of the 1800's.
