What we are doing is being more active around the classroom because Mr. Finkbeiner says that moving around the room when you’re in an authoritative role helps manage talking and helps kids stay focused since they know you’re really paying attention, even though we were before. This involves all the kids so it is pretty effective. We also tried have FlipGrid videos being assigned and then we grade them, and that seems to make them want to work more, to get a good grade. We haven't really been the ones grading them, but besides that everything is working alright. We have other things coming down the road that we're going to be implementing at some point as well.

There honestly aren't many opportunities to create bonds with the students of this class. Since we're mostly just helping them learn music while Fink does the rest, it is somewhat difficult to get one on one time the kids. There are some connections made, but not many, and not to the extent that others might get.

There is one kid who is in percussion who doesn't really get things done when working on his own He needs help one on one. He seems to understand how the instruments work and how notes work, but sometimes he just doesn't have enough confidence to think he's correct. What I like to do is ask him a question about a certain thing, and then when he is all quiet and reluctant to answer the question I'll say that there's nothing to worry about. Then he'll give an answer, and if it's wrong I'll explain how it was close to the right answer, but not quite it, and then I'll explain the correct answer. This goes for him playing as well, and he eventually understands what is going on, so it is obviously working.

I've learned quite a bit by observing Mr. Finkbeiner this year. He has opened up my eyes when it comes to how difficult it can be to teach a class of kids, especially something as different as an instrument. It definitely looked easy to do it, in the beginning, but as time went on it was more apparent how hard it was. The kids became increasingly less focused, so he took more time letting them know they were off task or something. That took time out of actually learning their music so he had to play catch up with them occasionally, which just made things harder. He showed me how to be patient with kids, and when it was necessary to not be so patient, and how to act in that sort of situation. When I taught the class with Jared, it was even more obvious how hard it was, we didn't do very well (in my opinion). Even though we were prepared, some things we had planned either didn't happen due to time, or just wouldn't have gone well. The question isn't whether or not you can teach a kid something, but how well you taught them that thing is what you should really look at, that is what I learned over this year, and it has really helped open my eyes.

What is Teaching to ME?

In a band setting I believe that the kids knowing that you're in charge is key. Once they know that, you can begin to establish relationships with the students since they won't step over boundaries that maybe you wouldn't have if you were just friends. Getting work done is my main goal, but also having is too. Teaching the kids fun music and doing it in everyone's learning style (that's possible) is important as well. Them learning more about their instrument through video assignments and research would allow for a better appreciation too. What I don't agree with is trying to implement a bunch of different online resources and such to teach things like music. I've learned over my high school musical career that just playing music and staying on task is the best idea. Doing things like Rhythm Masters and key signature papers are pointless, and the kids don't get engaged in them at all. They waste precious time, especially with performances all of the time. That is the basis of what I believe teaching is. If I taught college I would be more strict about just playing music and relationships with students would be less important. They're adults, and I have better things to worry about than knowing how a kid's family is going to Frankenmuth for Memorial Day Weekend and they're really excited to go to Bavarian Inn for the 47th time this year.
