“All those priests,” “they're too fat anyway” I can’t disagree because Rudy was right, those priests could go on a diet, and I was still hungry. Being hungry drove me the most right now. I watched as Rudy poured buckets of dirty water on the stoney road. I have to admit, I did feel guilty, but it was done anyway. The road soon turned to ice and that fat little kid, happy go lucky, biked right through the ice. He ended up face down in the ice, he wasn't moving. Rudy and I glanced at each other and back to his body “Did we kill him?!”“Is he breathing?”We ran as fast as we could away from him. I turned around to see him slowly getting up and scratching his head while he looked for that basket. We returned to Arthur to show him our find, broken eggs, bread, and a massive ham. Everyone ate good tonight and I will admit that the ham was amazing considering I haven’t eaten good.

A tall gangly shadow stood in the doorway of the kitchen and a raspy noise emerged from the shadow.

“Hans Hubermann?”

Papa proceeded to take the young man in, he hadn’t noticed me yet til he turned around.

“Papa?”

“Go back to bed leisel, everything is fine”

I was drifting into the realm of quietness when suddenly I heard loud footsteps heading back into the kitchen. I was still interested so i tiptoed into the hallway to spy, she looked at both of her parents, both looked worried and confused.

I still was very interested, I had come back into the kitchen. I could tell they were about to tell me something important.

“As you can see we have a visitor”

We had been standing around the table but mama forced me to sit.

“Now listen, Liesel. Papa’s going to tell you something today”

Mama was being completely serious, she didn’t even call me a saumensch, she was being very serious.

“He’ll talk to you and you have to listen”

I was a little scared, mama would usually be swearing and that made her a lot less scary but now i knew that this was important and i can’t fool around with what she was going to say. I swallowed my spit. I squeezed out a-

“Yes mama”

I finally saw the gangly man, he was discolored, and had very small eyes, and a misshapen nose. I was grabbing a couple extra sheets for him, mama was making him some space downstairs in the basement. The smell of paint smothered the face of my nose.

I was told to keep everything a secret, I couldn't tell anyone, not even Rudy, apparently we could get in huge trouble if anyone knows, and mama was being very serious so I did not disobey. As I was going to bed papa said he wanted to tell a story about the war. He had been friends with a man by the name of Erik Vandenburg, Erik was a dear friend of Hans. Hans could only repay Erik with one small but complicated solution. He would take care of his son when the time comes. Erik had died in that war, Hans could only repay him one way, and that’s how we got to this moment. That man had saved Hans’s life and for that Hans would take care of his son. The man that had arrived at their house was in hiding and was in great need of help. Papa is a caring man so he said that he had to take care of him.“If you tell, anyone, i will take everyone of your books and throw them in an open fire, the oven, the lake, if anyone ever finds out you will lose everything you know and love”Tears welled in my eyes. “I'm sorry, but you can’t tell anyone about that man.”“Yes, papa”I started to sob uncontrollably. Papa’s warm arms welcomed me. The man slept for 3 days straight.I had become obsessed with watching him, I wanted him to wake up. I wanted to check if he was breathing. He twitched back and forth every so often. It was hard to pull myself away from him, I couldn't help it but I was obsessed with watching him, he mumbled names, the only one I could really tell that he was saying was Hitler.

“Hitler” that name only brought pain. To most people it was a hopeful new leader to the others he was the evil, he was the one that made life pointless. He had ruined millions of lives and forced people into hiding to be never seen again. Take the man in our basement, his rights were snagged from him and he couldn’t have don't anything, his chance at life was stolen from him by a man who has hate for only the race. They are people too, they are the same as everyone else. If this situation has taught me anything it's that not everyone is dealt fair cards, some get to lead the world, others follow and succumb to peer pressure. I bet that there are millions of other people in the world who are living a better life than the jews right now. I just think it’s unfair how some don’t even get a chance.“I am haunted by humans”-Death
