Abstract: Establishing connections among critical thinking, language proficiency and writing

In the present era of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), undergraduates are required to be critical in their thinking and be proficient in English and writing. These skills are regarded as crucial in helping the undergraduates to secure academic success at the university and have good employment prospects upon graduation. However, research on the relationships among these variables is limited and the findings have not been conclusive. This paper reports on the results of a study conducted on Malaysian undergraduates studying in a local public university. The objective of the study was to determine the relationships among the undergraduates’ language proficiency, critical thinking level and writing ability. The undergraduates completed the Bahasa Malaysia version of the Cornell Critical Thinking Test (CCTT) and a background questionnaire, and wrote a persuasive essay. Results indicated that critical thinking is connected to writing ability. Significant correlation was found between critical thinking and proficiency in English. This finding supports the threshold level hypothesis (Cummins, 1976, 1979) which highlights the positive cognitive effects of bilingualism.

Antioxidant activity in different parts of roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) extracts and potential exploitation of the seeds

The calyx of the roselle plant has long been recognised as a source of antioxidants. The objective of this study was to evaluate antioxidant activity, free radical-scavenging and total phenolic content in other parts of the roselle plant. Roselle seed extracts were found to have the highest antioxidant activity and strongest radical-scavenging activity of all plants tested. Methanol extracts showed a positive correlation between phenolic content and antioxidant activity, as measured by β-carotene bleaching assay and DPPH radical-scavenging activity. The antioxidant efficacy of roselle seeds in a whole food system was investigated by testing the effect on lipid oxidation in cooked beef patties stored at 4 °C for 14 days. Results showed that patties treated with roselle seeds had reduced lipid oxidation compared to patties treated with BHT. This study suggests that roselle seeds have the potential to be used as food antioxidants.

COMPOSING LETTERS WITH A SIMULATED LISTENING TYPEWRITER

1With a listening typewriter, what an author says would be automatically recognized and displayed in front of him or her. 2 However, speech recognition is not yet advanced enough to provide people with a reliable listening typewriter. 3 An aim of our experiments was to determine if an imperfect listening typewriter would be useful for composing letters. 4 Participants dictated letters, either in isolated words or in consecutive word speech. 5 They did this with simulations of listening typewriters that recognized either a limited vocabulary or an unlimited vocabulary. 6 Results indicated that some versions, even upon first using them, were at least as good as traditional methods of handwriting and dictating. 7 Isolated word speech with large vocabularies may provide the basis for a useful listening typewriter.

Social career management: Social media and employability skills gap

Social capital theorists have established decades ago that better connected people do better in life. The emergence of online social networking sites have given a new impetus to building and exploiting connections for career management. While professionals acknowledge that social networking is essential for business and development, new graduates coming into the corporate world are not equipped with the up to date skill set. Through the lens of the improved employability objectives, this paper draws conclusions from a recent study of UK business graduates and their use of social networking. The paper presents for discussion an employability skill set for contemporary business professional and calls for higher education to address the skill gap. Further research directions are discussed.
