         <description><![CDATA[<div>After overthrowing the centuries-old  monarchy, Russia emerged from a civil war in 1921 as the newly formed Soviet Union. The world’s first Communist state would become one of the biggest and most powerful nations in the world, occupied  nearly one-sixth of Earth’s land surface, before its fall and ultimate dissolution in 1991. During the 1960s and 1970s, the Communist Party rapidly gained wealth and power while millions of average Soviet citizens faced starvation. The Soviet Union’s push to  any cost resulted in frequent shortages of food and consumer goods. Bread lines were common throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Soviet citizens often did not have access to basic needs, such as clothing or shoes.</div>]]></description>
