Equality and Gender vs Society
addresses the problems and unfairness women go through on a day to day bases. Equality addresses the treatment, pay, opportunities, and independence. Gender vs Society addresses how women are sometimes seen as mindless or dependent people and when this happens women show society error made by double standards and stereotypes . Edna desired to be herself and not change for someone else's benefit or because that"s how the world demanded it to be. When Edna and her family went on vacation and the time she spent with Robert was when she realized she wasn't being her true self. This change over vacation Edna had appeared as if she was another person and her husband and children felt that she wasn't herself but in reality this was Edna's true self without having to care about anything or anybody other than herself and living her life the way she wanted to without her husband.

The author of Fences and author of Awakening both look at the issue from the oppressed people’s point of view. In awakening, a lot of focus is on Mrs. Pontellier’s issues and state of mind. In Fences, the main character Troy Manson is used as an example of the oppression black people in America face.

Race, Men and Masculinity, Family, Duty, and Betrayal

Race is incorporated in Fence's themes heavily through Troy's dreams and hopes of becoming a Major League Player while being Black during America's segregation era.

"The whole time I was growing up living in his house Papa was like a shadow that followed you everywhere. It weighed on you and sunk into your flesh. It would wrap around you and lay there until you couldn't tell which one was you anymore." (Act 2, Scene 5)
In this quote the theme of family is implied through Cory's negative feelings to his father. In this time period, family was important, especially for Blacks. And having poor family relations was harmful since they were already being discriminated against.

Women and Femininity, Marriage, Love, Family, Society and Class, Respect and Reputation

Both authors portray the main characters (Troy and Mrs. Pontellier) as unhappy and oppressed in their current life. The characters find a way to enlightenment and then death causes them to be "free" from a society working against them.

Although Wilson and Chopin were writing during the same period, the issues they focused on were different because the lenses they were written through. The main idea of both authors were oppressed people in a system working against them. The authors similarly write about how the oppressed, (African Americans and Women) could break off the chains that held them back during that time period. Both authors can personally relate to the story because Kate Chopin is a woman herself and August Wilson's mother was African American.
