One of the main takeaways from this chapter is that lexile scores can be affected by word count and word choice. We need students to engage in incrementally more demanding tasks; this is not to say that we should flood students with opportunities for failure but rather that they are provided with opportunities to learn from their struggles. Many teachers and readers overlook that when the reading gets hard, readers slow down and try to make sense of the book.
Some implications for instructions are that even if it takes time, finding the correct book for students is key for teaching career and college readiness skills.
