Alopecia areata is a disease that happens when the immune system attacks hair strands and causes hair loss. Hair strands are the structures in skin that form hair. While hair can be lost from any part of the body, alopecia areata usually affects the head and face.

Anyone can have alopecia areata. Men and women get it equally, and it affects all racial and ethnic groups. The onset can be at any age, but most people get it in their teens, twenties, or thirties. When it occurs in children younger than age 10, it tends to be more extensive and progressive.

If you have a close family member with the disease, you may have a higher risk of getting it, but for many people, there is no family history. Scientists have linked a number of genes to the disease, which suggests that genetics play a role in alopecia areata. Many of the genes they have found are important for the functioning of the immune system.

People with certain autoimmune diseases, such as psoriasis, thyroid disease, or vitiligo, are more likely to get alopecia areata, as are those with allergic conditions such as hay fever.

It is possible that emotional stress or an illness can bring on alopecia areata in people who are at risk, but in most cases, there is no obvious trigger.

1: What illness can get rid of your hair [besides chemo]?

Any illness can cause a person to have hair loss. This type of hair loss is called telogen effluvium. It is seen between four to six months AFTER the illness or even extremely stressful event. Luckily, it is not permanent, however it is very distressing as it often happens after you have completely recovered from the initial illness or stress that caused the hair to fall out.

2: Why do we have facial hair?

We do not know the answer to this, because if facial hair were required for survival of the human race, then you would expect women would have facial hair as well as men!

3 What in your genetics can cause albinism?

I have thought about this question, and I think the best way to answer this, is that albinism is complex "mutation" of several genes to prevent pigment forming in our body. We are very lucky that we are able to protect people who have these mutations in their genes, so that they can enjoy being like others, so long as they take steps to protect themselves from the sun.

4: Can different diets affect hair health?

Life is all about balance. So yes, diets that do lack good nutrition will affect the health of your hair. Malnutrition or lack of nutrition is not always caused by an unbalanced diet, it can also be caused by malabsorption - meaning for some people, they are not able to absorb normal nutrients. This can be made worse if they do not have a balanced diet. Living in New Zealand, we have to pay attention to our Vitamin D levels, because if we avoid the sun - which is important to avoid skin cancer, then we may lack Vitamin D! It is also important to have enough iron in our diet, and for some religions, this may mean these people will require extra Vitamin D(as they cover their body whenever outside) or iron(for example Hinduism, Jainism) . Luckily it is easy to replace.

Another trace element that we are low on in New Zealand is Selenium. Theoretically, if you are a Vegan (do not eat any animal products including eggs) then you will need to consider having this added to your diet. For most of us, if we stick to eating five colours and reduce the amount of food that comes in a package, then we will have a good balanced diet, and do not need to be concerned, so long as our bodies are able to absorb the nutrients it needs from the food we eat.

5: What can cause more hair loss?

Genes are the biggest factor for female and male pattern hair loss. For men, this can be related to a special type of "steroid" called Dihydrotestosterone. Luckily, there are some very effective medicines that can help a vast majority of people to reduce, and even treat this type of hairloss. There are many other causes, and it is best that you see doctors who are interested in this area, as they will be able to explain and treat most causes of hair loss.
