The story Packing revolves around three men and how they pack for an upcoming trip. The previous evening the author and his two friends made a list of things to be packed before parting that evening. The next day they gathered all the things together to pack. They got a Gladstone for the clothes and hampers for the provisions and utensils. The author said that he would pack as he felt that he was better at packing than most people. Harris and George, his friends agreed to the suggestion quite happily. They then sat down to relax and Harris lit a cigar. The author felt irritated as he had meant that Harris and George would do the work while he gave them instructions. He felt annoyed the way they took what he said as he could not bear other people relaxing and watching him while he worked. Once he had finished packing and strapped and shut the bag Harris reminded him that he had forgotten to pack the boots. Once he packed the boots he forgot whether he packed his toothbrush and had to turn out everything in the bag to find it. Once he repacked the bag he realized he put his tobacco pouch in and had to reopen it. Once the bag was finally shut and strapped George enquired whether the soap was in to which the author replied that he did not care whether the soap was in or out. George and Harris decided to do the hampers. Since George and Harris were bad packers and there were still a variety of items to pack, the author felt excited to see what would happen. While packing George and Harris broke a cup, packed heavy things on the pies, trod on the butter, upset salt over everything and did various other stunts while packing. Their dog Montmorency also got involved in the chaos and put his leg into the jam, squashed the lemons and also did various other stunts. When they finished Harris hoped that nothing had broken and George replied that whatever was broken was broken and would stay that way. They then went to bed and after having a row about what time to wake up they all fell asleep.

This story is not only humorous but also hilarious. Jerome feels that he is the best in packing as compared to his friends Jim and Harris. The mishaps that take place and the food that either gets smashed or squished and is a waste of time. Jerome's dog Montemerancy also interferes in the packing and creates a mess. Finally they decide to take a nap and quarrel on the time to be woken up and decide at 6.30. The bag finally got finished at 10:05 p.m. Now, the hampers task remained to do which was taken by George and Harris. However, according to narrator they are worst packer in the world. The narrator could see the piles of plates and cups, and kettles, and bottles, and jars, and pies, and stoves, and cakes, and tomatoes, etc. getting broken and squashed. The narrator thinking was right as they started breaking the cup. Harris packed the strawberry jam on top of a tomato and squashed it. George stepped on the butter. The narrator came over and quietly sat on the edge of the table which irritated them as narrator felt. It made them nervous and excited. They couldn't able to find what they want. They packed the pies at the bottom and squashed them by putting heavy thing over them. George got the butter off his slipper and tried to put it in kettle, but it wouldn't go in. At last, they dragged it out all and put it down the chair. Harris sat on it and butter stuck to him. They searched the whole room but couldn't able to find. Lastly, George found it and packed it in the teapot. Montmorency, pet dog had an ambition in his life to get in the way and get scolded, came in between of the packing process which irritated both of them.
