Dina the Deaf Dinosaur by Carole Addabbo

This book was published in 1998 and all of the illustrations are done by water color! This book is all about a deaf dinosaur, Dina, running away from home because her parents won't let her learn sign language! She meets friends in the forest and they slowly teach her sign language! Dina feels so accepted that people are willing to learn her language. This book is important to me because both of my parents are deaf so it was important for me to know about deaf culture from a young age. I remember my mom and dad signing this book to me while reading, it is one of my core memories. This book is really good to bring awareness to deaf culture!
URL to book: https://www.amazon.com/Dina-Deaf-Dinosaur-Carole-Addabbo/dp/1889262927/ref=sr_1_1?crid=208ZDTZGVE3AC&keywords=dina+the+deaf+dinosaur&qid=1642174882&sprefix=dina+the+%2Caps%2C121&sr=8-1

Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother, Too? by Eric Carle

This book was published in 2000. This book is all about different kinds of animals and if they have mothers or not. I remember reading this book with my mother when I was young. I always remember reminding myself growing up that every animal has a mother and father growing up. This book has impacted me up until today! For example, I decided to become vegan back in August 2021. I remember making that decision, while thinking of this simple book I used to read with my mom about how all animals have mothers too. I have always been an animal mother and I do believe it is because this book being read to me as a young child really set the thought in my head that animals have families like you and I!
URL to book: https://www.amazon.com/Does-Kangaroo-Have-Mother-Too/dp/006443642X/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1642174927&sr=8-1

This book was published in 2003. This book is about a young student, Vashti, who has a creative block and can't think of what artwork to create! Her art teacher tells her to come up with something, anything. She puts a dot on her paper and signs her name. By the next week, her artwork of the dot is hung up in her teacher's room! Vashti then got inspired and started painting all different color dots on different pieces of paper. She then starting mixing colors, and trying new sizes for her dots! She showcased all of her dots at the school art show. She has an interaction with a boy who claims he can't draw, not even lines. She handed him a piece of paper and says "show me." After he does, she says "please sign it." This book was read to me by my art teacher. It is such an important book because it shows that we can amount to anything, we just have to start first. Whenever I am in a creative block, I always find myself thinking of this book.
URL to book: https://www.amazon.com/Dot-Peter-H-Reynolds/dp/0763619612/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3DJDT8FIR3HTI&keywords=the+dot&qid=1642174966&sprefix=the+dot%2Caps%2C116&sr=8-1

This book was published in 2006. It was actually re-illustrated in 2015. It is all about how we can share kindness everyday! I remember my parents both reading this to me. This book is all about a bucket (this is a metaphor) that sticks with you and can fill up depending on what we say or do and what others say or do to us! This book talks about how we can be bucket fillers by spreading kindness and appreciation! We can also be bucket dippers by being mean, and taking away people's kindness. We want to be bucket fillers! I really like this book because as a child I remember imagining having a bucket at school, at the grocery store, in the doctor's office, etc! It encouraged me to spread appreciation and kindness and I know this would be a really good book to share kindness and what it can do in people's lives to our students!
URL to book: https://www.amazon.com/Have-Filled-Bucket-Today-Bucketfilling/dp/099609993X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2LYCJT3Z8SWU&keywords=have+you+filled+a+bucket+today&qid=1642175005&sprefix=have+y%2Caps%2C124&sr=8-1

This book was published in 2012. I read this book in middle school, and then I re-read it in high school before the movie came out. It is such a good book about how looking different does not challenge your potential. I also love this book because it gives you a different perspective/outlook. We really see how words and gestures can really break someone down. This book is about a boy, Auggie, who was born with a facial difference who has to attend a public school. He is so nervous because he knows that he does not look like everyone else. He has a hard time adjusting, as some people are really mean. This book takes us through Auggie's perspective while he learns to accept who he is. It is an amazing read!
URL to book: https://www.amazon.com/Wonder-R-J-Palacio/dp/0375869026/ref=sr_1_4?crid=AR2UF5SGFIX2&keywords=wonder&qid=1642175039&sprefix=wonder%2Caps%2C106&sr=8-4

This book is one of my favorites when it comes to speaking on African American culture through a child's eyes. This book was published in 2020! This girl speaks about how black is her color, and there is culture and importance that comes with her color. I love how this book illustrates being proud of who you are and where you came from.
Sometimes People March by Tessa Allen

I absolutely love this book! This book was published in 2020. When we look throughout history, and even now, marching is a way of standing up for what you believe in. In this country, we have had to stand up together to make a difference. This book is all about people coming together and to march for what we believe in! I think this book is so cool. It shows students that when people come together, a change will be made. Although this does not focus on one specific culture, many different cultures have had to march to receive rights, or just to be treated equally. I think this book is a wonderful gateway to many lessons.
URL to book: https://www.amazon.com/Sometimes-People-March-Tessa-Allen/dp/0062991183/ref=asc_df_0062991183/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=459726190744&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=6233879510250657499&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9012325&hvtargid=pla-920997001902&psc=1

This book was published in 2020. I was originally introduced to the book during my Level 1 Internship. The school I was located at would focus on a specific culture every month. They were focusing on Ethiopian culture one month, and my CT read this book to her class. It is all about a little girl who got embarrassed and is trying to make friends by using one of her family traditions. She makes bunas for her class and it ends up going really well! I really enjoy this book.
URL to book: https://www.amazon.com/Big-Buna-Bash-Different-Ethiopian/dp/1951565010

Fishing was apart of their culture as they fished for food. If they caught something, they had dinner for the night.

This book was published in 1996! I think this book is a lighthearted children's book that would be wonderful for K-2nd grade! A Thai mother quietly asks a few animals to be quiet while she puts her child to sleep. I have read this book through elementary school multiple times and it never gets old. Using the correct tone and pace are key for reading this book!
URL to book: https://www.amazon.com/Hush-Thai-Lullaby-Minfong-Ho/dp/0531071669/ref=asc_df_0531071669/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312132076929&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4438399833603988673&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9012325&hvtargid=pla-557000819197&psc=1

These books were published between the years of 2008-2010. I read these books in middle school. It is all about a society where the rich and poor are separated, and there is a lot of corruption. The poor are treated terribly, and the rich are treated too well. Katniss is the main character that we see progress and attempt to change the society she lives in. She experiences a lot of heartbreak and loss. I would recommend these books to middle schoolers, as thats when I read them. The author does an amazing job writing and telling this story.
URL to books: https://www.amazon.com/Hunger-Hardcover-Catching-Mockingjay-Songbirds/dp/1338686534/ref=asc_df_1338686534/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=459638184606&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14401580472088296159&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9012325&hvtargid=pla-919039600011&psc=1

This book talks about Chief Red Cloud and how he won a war against the U.S Army. He ended up making an agreement with the U.S government to move his tribe to a reservation (to stop potential destruction of his people). It is such a sweet book that I believe children of all ages can enjoy. This book is a classic when it comes to literature. This book is all about a friendship between a spider named Charlotte, and a pig named Wilbur. So, of course, I read it (didn't need too much convincing to read a book)! This book represents friendship and bonding. In this book, if a unicorn and human bond, a strand of the person's hair will change to the same color as the unicorn's mane. In this book specifically, it revolves around Ava and Star who feel like they have bonded, but Ava's hair has not changed color yet!

This book was published in 1980. I remember reading all of the Roald Dahl books when I was younger. These books make me crack up and laugh so, so hard! This book in particular is pretty funny. This book is all about The Twits. They are a married couple who hate everything except rather malicious things. They own monkeys, which they call "Muggle-Wumps" and the Twits make them stand on their heads every... single... day! These monkeys have had enough and are going to try to plot revenge on the Twits, for making them do these terrible things.
URL to book: https://www.amazon.com/Twits-Roald-Dahl/dp/014241039X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3FFKCH89I53OA&keywords=the+twits&qid=1651454299&s=books&sprefix=the+twits%2Cstripbooks%2C96&sr=1-1

This book was published in 2007. This book is all about a character named Michael Arroyo. He plays baseball and is AMAZING at it. But, his home life is not so amazing. He was recently orphaned, and only has one family member, his brother. He is scared of being separated from his brother, as it is the only person he has left. They work together alone, steering clear from the foster-care system. He becomes so famous due to baseball, that people want to know his backstory! He has no personal documentation, and is "outed" to the world (his situation). He finds family with the most unexpected people. This book is so heartwarming, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a good read.
URL to book: https://www.amazon.com/Heat-Mike-Lupica/dp/0142407577/ref=sr_1_1?crid=16OUAU0MMKQUL&keywords=heat+by+mike+lupica&qid=1651456360&s=books&sprefix=heat+by+m%2Cstripbooks%2C161&sr=1-1

I read these books as I was growing up, and loved them. I will never forget, my school librarian let me loan out an extra book or two from this series because she knew I was reading through them like crazy. These books are all about the Boxcar children. There are two girls (Jessie and Violet), and two boys (Henry and Benny). They are siblings, who are also orphans. They find an abandoned boxcar in the woods one day, and decide to make it their home. This begins an amazing series of books!
URL to books: https://www.amazon.com/Boxcar-Children-Books-Book-Set/dp/0964716852/ref=sr_1_4?crid=2QNPNXBJLPGZD&keywords=boxcar+children+book+series+set&qid=1651458225&s=books&sprefix=boxca%2Cstripbooks%2C91&sr=1-4
https://www.amazon.com/Boxcar-Children-Books-Set-24/dp/0807567744/ref=sr_1_7?crid=2QNPNXBJLPGZD&keywords=boxcar+children+book+series+set&qid=1651458254&s=books&sprefix=boxca%2Cstripbooks%2C91&sr=1-7

I love this book because it is informational and gives you a brief history lesson, but also keeps you interested as there are these mythical and monstrous created drawn all over the maps. This is a classic novel and I remember reading it multiple times as a student whether it was individual, or in a classroom setting.

This book was published in 2021. This book features Ned the Hamster as he embarks on completing a race. Ned has to learn what kindness is, but he is letting the race get in the way of that! During the race, he is going to see some critters who need his help. Is he going to assist them? Or keep running? I love this book as it is so heartwarming and can inspire readers to be kinds and to look after others!
URL to book: https://www.amazon.com/Ned-Great-Garden-Hamster-Race/dp/0241413419/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3LQ25HUQID5ET&keywords=ned+and+the+great+garden+hamster+race&qid=1651516895&s=books&sprefix=ned+and+the+%2Cstripbooks%2C98&sr=1-1

This book was published in 1972. Alexander’s bad day is a classic among children’s literature. Poor Alexander has one of those days when nothing is going right, and he might as well move. The repetition of the “terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day” makes this book a beloved read aloud because young readers learn the phrase and repeat it right alongside the reader. Repetition is always a good thing to look for in books as students feel more involved and engaged when they can repeat phrases with the characters.
URL to book: https://www.amazon.com/Alexander-Terrible-Horrible-Good-Very/dp/0689711735/ref=sr_1_1?crid=PII83YBRGGWN&keywords=alexander+and+the+terrible%2C+horrible%2C+no+good%2C+very+bad+day&qid=1651521101&s=books&sprefix=alexander+and+the+terri%2Cstripbooks%2C131&sr=1-1

This book was published in 2004. This book starts off with Padraic Colum telling the story of Jason, the Argonauts, and their quest for the Golden Fleece. This book is simply written, and has wondrous settings and characters described in throughout the text. Readers will be instantly drawn to the first scene in which a slave carries the baby Jason, son of King Aeson, up the side of the mountain and is met by Chiron, the centaur. Jason's destiny is to rule Iolcus, the land that his uncle, King Pelias, had taken from him, but when Jason comes of age and returns to Iolcus, the king is not willing to give up his throne. The cunning king persuades Jason to accept a dare to bring back the famous Golden Fleece of Colchis, and Jason accepts, unaware that he is being conned into a dangerous journey far from the land he loves. The heroes Heracles, Theseus, Perseus, and Atalanta, all travel with Jason in the ship ARGO as he journeys to strange lands inhabited by strange beings. Throughout the book, there are magical golden apples, comical battles between mice and frogs, beautiful nymphs, powerful sorceresses, a monster that is half-bull and half-man, and shoes that can make the wearer fly. This book is sure to keep you on your toes!
URL to book: https://www.amazon.com/Golden-Fleece-Heroes-Before-Achilles/dp/0689868847/ref=sr_1_1?crid=OR1EHA71PVKY&keywords=the+golden+fleece+padraic+colum&qid=1651521915&sprefix=the+golden+fleece+pa%2Caps%2C89&sr=8-1
