In my classes when we do research projects, I always ensure that not all of the choices are of the same race or gender. I also put up quotes weekly, in choosing my quotes I try to choose people of all races and walks of life.

I always tell my classes, i love them when they leave. I also try to find at least one thing in common with each student, I also ask questions about their families. I believe it is important that my students learn from each other, i try to incorporate brain breaks in the classroom where they go ahead and ask each other questions, and share things with each other.

I think any way that we can celebrate difference is beneficial for students. In Art we discuss different artists and cultures and explore artwork that relates differently to all kinds of people. We explore themes in work that address different social issues and consider how the work is embraced and interpreted differently based on your own cultural background. Art is a very unique subject that allows students to interact and appreciate differences. This is why everyone should take Art! ;)

I tell my students I love them! And I mean it. Sometimes it might be coupled with other statements like, "I know we're working hard right now, but I LOVE YOU and I want you to succeed." When they get down on themselves I remind them that 10 years from now, they won't remember the assignment but that I hope they remember a teacher loved them, believed in them and wanted to help them succeed. I've seen it make a difference in the relationship I have with a number of students.
