In Art we discuss different artists and cultures and explore artwork that relates differently to all kinds of people. We explore themes in work that address different social issues and consider how the work is embraced and interpreted differently based on your own cultural background. Art is a very unique subject that allows students to interact and appreciate differences. And I mean it. Sometimes it might be coupled with other statements like, "I know we're working hard right now, but I LOVE YOU and I want you to succeed."  When they get down on themselves I remind them that 10 years from now, they won't remember the assignment but that I hope they remember a teacher loved them, believed in them and wanted to help them succeed.  I've seen it make a difference in the relationship I have with a number of students.
