The changes in the character through the story with two specific examples and textual evidence

The main character in The Enemy changed his feeling towards his enemy drastically by the end of the story. Initially, the Main Character thought the enemy was a monster with no family. We can prove this because in the story, his belief is that "He is a wild beast. He does not know mercy." He also claims that "The enemy is not a human being." We can infer that this is because this is what his manual says. The main character tells us that "I know this because I read it in my manual". This proves his initial beliefs.

Later in the story, when he goes to kill the enemy by going to his trench, he finds a manual (just like his). In the manuel, he finds pictures of the enemy's family. The main character says that "I wasn't expecting him to have a family".
In the enemy's manuel, "the enemy has a face". This is when our main character's belief starts shifting to realising the enemy is a human being and not a monster like his manuel told him.

The change in his perspective causes the main character to want the war to end, but not violently like he primarily wanted. He now wants the war to end peacefully. This is emphasized when he throws a bottle suing for peace at the end of the story.

The challenges the main character would face if they were around now

If our main character was alive today, things would drastically change. For starters, the story was set in the middle of World War 1. Today, no major war in Europe is taking place. The main character would probably be working his life as a normal citizen would, and not as a soldier. But if he was still in war today, one thing would drastically differ his beliefs: the internet. The internet provides numerous perspectives around the planet. On the contrary, the main character's manual is a singular, government regulated perspective that is designed to make the main character hate the enemy. We can prove this when, in the story, he claims all his opinions were given to him by his manual. "I know this because I read it in my manual". The internet would change his perspective and he would probably find out the enemy is not evil but like him.

Moments of trouble in the character's life that reveal his traits

One moment of trouble is when the main character is when he is afraid if the enemy did anything to him. For example, he does not want to escape his trench because "The enemy will think I am desperate". He also thinks that his water could be poisoned by the enemy. His action that he took because of his belief is to kill him and the war will end. He's afraid of the enemy unaware that the enemy is afraid of him. All the lies that his manuel fed him are causing paranoia in his head and he thinks that the enemy will stop at nothing to kill him. Later in the story when he learns the enemy was not in fact a monster, he just wants the war to end peacfully.

Character traits that collide with what's going on in the background

My main impression of the character was that he was a dutiful soldier who never questioned what he was tasked with. He wanted to kill the enemy and move on with life. But, where his traits started to collide with the background was when he learnt about the enemy's manuel and realised that his enemy was not the monster he thought he was. When he saw pictures of the enemy's family, he says "I wasn't expecting him to have a family...". He also reads that, in the enemy's manuel, the enemy has a face. He starts to question what he was told by his leaders which clashes with his dutiful and un-questioning beliefs. After that moment, he no longer wanted to kill the enemy, but rather make peace with him.
