I applied for college in High Shcool but decided to continue working instead of right to college. A year later I moved to Berkeley, lived with my friends who were going to CAL and I went to Berkely CIty COmmunity COllege. IT was kind of cool because a lot of my classes were on the CAL campus.  I always worked full time and found it hard to prioritize school over paying my bills. It took me a long time to finally be ready to prioritize my dreams and start thinking long term. I spent 12 years in community colleges before I was ready for the UNIVERSITY!!! I moved to Santa Cruz once I was accepted to UCSC and the rest is herstory!!!!

West Valley Junior College (dual enrollment and summer session), UCSB (BA in History), University College, Cork (Ireland), UCSB (Ph.D. program - I did not finish but I did get my Masters), Santa Barbara City College, SJSU (teaching credential). Freshman year of high school I knew I wanted to study history. I did not know what I wanted to do with that, but as I taught more classes at UCSB I figured out I that I really enjoy grading lots of papers. Ok...But I do love love discussing and learning about the past with my students. I spent a LOT of time in the library, to the point where I found every quiet spot in order to be able to study. I also found all of the best food around campus, and spent a lot of time in the Davis music scene. Davis has so many cool and kind people, and I miss it often.

Cabrillo was the best experience because I was able to pick and choose classes until I found something that I was interested in. Plus, it was affordable and once I knew what I wanted to do  I then was able to transfer to a 4 year and really dedicate myself to my future career.

I grew up in LA county and was the first in my family to leave home. I came to Santa Cruz right after high school and have been here ever since. 

I did not have to pay for my undergrad because I received numerous scholarships. My dad told me he would not be able to support me financially so he made me apply to scholarships basically every day for months. I truly believe, that if there is a will there is a way. I visited a few colleges and then chose the Bachelor of Arts in English degree program at The Ohio State University. Their mascot is Brutus the Buckeye.
It was a great experience and I learned a lot about literature and also writing.
After finishing my BA, I went to the University of Colorado to earn my Master’s degree and then I earned my teaching credential at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB).
I am very happy that I went to college. It was hard work sometimes. Though I still have friends from every university that I attended. Going to college helped me get a good job and build a teaching career that I love!

I graduated from Piedmont Hills High (in San Jose) in 2009. I immediately went to SJSU and for my first two years, worked my butt off. I wanted to transfer to UC Davis because during this time (because of the '09 recession), SJSU wouldn't let me double major! It was my goal to become an aggie because not only did my girlfriend at the time (now wife) go there, but because they offered me everything I wanted for my college career. In 2011 I was admitted to UCD as a transfer student and met some of my closest friends in the transfer dorms. It was a blast and an experience I'll never forget. Being in Davis allowed me to grow up and learn how to live on my own. In 2013 I graduated with a B.A in Political Science and another in International Relations. Despite having worked so hard for my future, I still didn't know what I wanted to do until I spent a month in Switzerland learning about all of the international organizations that exist there - it's not until then that I realized I wanted to make change at the grassroots level; and so I decided to pursue a career in education. In 2013 I got admitted to the UC Davis School of Education and two years later I graduated with my Masters degree and a teaching job at Napa High! In the late 80’s I chose UC Davis for their aeronautical engineering program. My uncle warned me I’d be one of the few women in the program and I would likely be facing an uphill battle. I thought, ‘pffft’, I can handle it- I was a rough and tumble tomboy, not afraid of a little competition…but he was right.  I had to work harder as the TA’s and professors wouldn’t give me and the other two females in the program the time of day. I’ve never felt so deflated. After two years, and a spell of general ed courses in sociology and psychology, I decided I wanted something more fulfilling. I focused on sociology with a pre-law focus, planning to go to law school, cause, well, I wanted to make my family proud and that’s what everyone else was doing. Now I had to work even harder to switch gears, likely extending college to a 5th costly year to meet all the requirements for graduation in a new program. 

What made all the difference in my college career was volunteering for the campus’ Entertainment Council and local theaters. That’s what kept me going. Deep down I had a love of theater and music, and the more I got involved, the more I thrived. I started working production, setting up stage, sound, and lighting equipment for concerts and dance performances, studying any manuals I could find to learn how it all worked. By the time I graduated I had been the Director for two years, booking shows with major touring acts, negotiating with the Fire Marshall as to whether ‘G.A.’ events should be allowed on campus, and considering going into Entertainment Law. As another male dominated industry, I chose to work more independently in managing venues and working for local community theaters. I was worried I’d be letting my family down in not going to law school, but I found my passion, and if I could make a living doing what I loved, I could imagine nothing more fulfilling. It wasn’t easy - it was scary going down a path I wasn’t sure my family would support, but it was all worth it. 

As a student there are many resources and opportunities. Get out there, challenge yourself- find what inspires you and work hard to make your dreams come true. We’re rooting for you!
