Banking and finance are to do with borrowing, saving and investing – whether that’s in the form of a mortgage to buy a house, a pension fund or the large sums of money invested by businesses and public bodies. Accountancy is about keeping track of an organisation’s money.

What jobs are out there?

There are two types of banking. Retail banking refers to the so-called 'high street banks' where you, your family and businesses keep their savings and apply for loans. In this area of work, you could work as a cashier, mortgage advisor or branch manager. Investment banks help individuals, businesses and other organisations make money from financial markets by investing in stocks and shares and other financial products. You could work as a market trader, fund manager, investment analyst or stockbroker.

Accountants keep track of an organisation's finances. Specialisms include tax accountants, who work out ways for companies to save money on tax while paying what they owe. Management accountants advise on decision-makers on their financial plans. Auditors independently check company accounts.

What subjects should I take?

Business

One way to build commercial awareness is to study business. You’ll learn the basics of how businesses work and how leaders make financial decisions. It is a great choice if you are considering a career in management accounting. Find out more.

Economics

Economics takes a look at how the global and national economy is structured, how financial markets relate to this and how money and other resources are shared out within the system. It is an ideal choice if you want to work in investment banking. Find out more.

Maths

Although a career in finance or accountancy isn’t just for mathematicians, the problem-solving and numerical aptitude you’ll develop in maths will help you understand how to manipulate the data in all those complex spreadsheets! Find out more.

Uni or apprenticeship?

University

Traditionally, university has been the route into both accountancy and financial services, which means that many employers have well-established graduate programmes.

For example, to become an accountant, you could apply to a professional services company, accountancy firm or employer looking for an in-house accountant. While working for your employer, you will study towards chartership with one of the industry bodies – ICAEW or ACCA.

Apprenticeship

There are lots of ways to enter a career in finance or accountancy through an apprenticeship. To become an accountant, you could do a degree apprenticeship, which provides the same chartered status you can gain through the graduate route.

If you want to get into investment banking, apprenticeships such as financial services professional could be your way into a career as a fund manager, investment analyst or stockbroker.

Law is made up of a whole host of jobs. Barristers represent clients in court, presenting the case for the defence or prosecution by cross-examining witnesses and presenting legal arguments to the judge and/or jury. Solicitors work directly with clients – some assist individuals on issues such as writing a will or getting a divorce, while others advise and represent organisations in legal matters.

Then there are conveyancers, solicitors who specialise in the buying and selling of property. There are many other specialist legal professionals too, such as patent attorneys whose expertise is in intellectual property. Many people are also involved in supporting the legal system – from court reporters who record what is said in court to ushers who make sure proceedings run smoothly, doing things like preparing the courtroom and calling witnesses.

In English, you will develop the communication skills legal professionals need to present a clear and persuasive case. You will also learn to structure an argument and respond to counter-arguments. Find out more.

University is a great way into legal careers which require a degree – roles such as barrister and solicitor. However apprenticeships are available in some of these careers, so make sure you know your options before applying.

Not all legal careers require a higher education qualification – for example, legal assistant and paralegal.

What jobs are out there?

Engineering is a vast field, with the industry employing around a quarter of the UK workforce! More familiar roles include civil or structural engineer – professionals who are involved in the design of buildings and infrastructure such as roads, railways and bridges. However, engineers also work in areas as diverse as medicine and computing.

For example, software engineers design computer programs and apps, while biomedical engineers develop technology for use in medicine, such as robotic limbs or surgical tools. Electronic engineers on the other hand design circuitry which goes into gadgets such as smartphones, games consoles and even cars. Regardless of the field, all these engineers use problem-solving skills to design solutions to technical challenges.

What skills do I need?

Analytical skills: The ability to look at information and work out what is important and relevant to the task in hand is vital for engineers. It is crucial to the key engineering process of solving problems (see below) – as you’ll need to be able to break down a complex problem into the steps it takes to solve it. Find out more.

Lateral thinking: New and creative approaches to challenges can help us succeed where traditional ways of thinking may have let us down. A great example from rail engineering is Japan’s Shinkansen train, which is shaped like a kingfisher’s beak to achieve speeds of 200mph while reducing noise pollution. Find out more.

Problem solving: Engineers are professional problem solvers. The questions they need to answer range from the very big – such as “how do I build a tunnel through this mountain?” – to the more everyday: “how do I halve the amount of sugar in this chocolate bar without compromising on taste?” Find out more.

Design and technology

Design and technology (D&T) may be useful if you want to become an engineer. While maths and science (see below) provide the theoretical knowledge you need to begin your training as an engineer, D&T will give you experience in undertaking design projects. Find out more.

Maths

Maths is typically an entry requirement of engineering degree courses – and for good reason! For example, engineers routinely use algebra and trigonometry in their work and must be able to confidently manipulate numbers and data every day. Find out more.

Physics

A science subject is required for many engineering degrees – you could pick biology or chemistry but physics makes a great choice. As well as providing you with key concepts useful in engineering, physics encourages you to ask – and answer – the kinds of big questions often demanded of engineers. Find out more.

Whatever path your teen might want to take (or even if they don’t know yet) work experience is a great addition to their CV and helps them stand out from others. Face-to-face work experience is great, and since Covid, many firms offer virtual work experience too, where your teen can find out how it feels to be part of the working world, from the comfort of their bedroom!

Many schools have a dedicated “work experience week” for certain years in the summer term, but don’t let your teen wait until then to register interest – because the best opportunities can go quickly. National Apprenticeship Event (Years 10-13)

If you're located in Birmingham, Cardiff, London, Manchester, or Newcastle, you can look forward to The National Apprenticeship & School Leaver Event happening throughout the year. Students can get independent careers advice because the event will feature a host of employers and training providers on hand to talk to people face-to-face about apprenticeships and other careers choices. It’s free to attend, open to all (including parents/carers) but booking is essential. The National Apprenticeship Event.

Options at 16 - The Extended Project Qualification (Years 12-13)

Many schools and colleges offer the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) which is a dissertation or project created on the basis of independent research. It is a Level 3 qualification usually taken in Year 12 or 13 and can help to encourage independent learning and prepare students for university or further study. It can also be a useful way for your teen to increase their UCAS points.
 

What are the benefits of doing an EPQ?

• It can give your teen academic confidence

• It can help them prepare for further education

• It can help your child demonstrate passion for a topic or subject – particularly helpful if they are applying for an apprenticeship or university course in the same subject area as their EPQ

• It can be a useful talking point during an interview

• It can help your child develop key skills, which are useful in the workplace; and

• It can be incredibly rewarding!

Preparing for exams ahead (Years 10-13)

Years 11 and 13 will be taking their finals this summer, and Years 10 and 12 will sit mocks. You can’t revise for your teen, but you can help them develop a good system that works well for them, as well as providing support at home to keep them strong, both mentally and physically. So what is the professional sport apprenticeship?

• How long is it? 18 months - 2 years.

• Who trains me? You will be trained at a club in your chosen sport (such as Football, Rugby, or Equestrianism).

• What qualifications will I get? Sporting excellence professional, BTEC sporting excellence and performance, Functional skills, Certificate in coaching.

• What happens next? In the second half of year two, clubs decide which apprentices to offer contracts to.

• What if I don’t get a contract? You will get support to apply for other opportunities, such as placements in the US or Europe.

Biology helps us understand how the human body works. In sport, this is particularly useful when learning how we perform under physical stress. If you choose to go down the sport science route, biology is often a requirement. Learn more.

T Levels (years 10 and 11):

If your teen’s in Year 11, they’ll be thinking about what to do in sixth form, whether that’s staying at school or going to college. If they enjoy focusing on real-life situations rather than theory, then T Levels could be the right choice for them.
 
T Levels are a sixth form qualification developed with employers and businesses to meet industry needs as well as preparing students for working life. One T Level is equivalent to three A levels and the course lasts for two years. T Levels involve a mix of classroom learning (about 80% of the course time) and practical experience (about 20% of the course time) including a 45 day on-the-job placement in a genuine business. Afterwards, students may go on to university, alternative higher education, another job, an apprenticeship or they may be offered an opportunity with the company where they were placed.

We’re excited to let you know that our weekend programmes are now open for registration!
 
Taking place this November, our one‑day masterclasses give students a practical, inside look of working in their chosen field. Students can choose from 15 different industries and spend the day discovering what it's really like to work in that field and, crucially, how to break in. 
 
During each programme, students will:

✅ Meet and learn from experienced professionals
✅ Take part in interactive career simulations 
✅ Receive expert career coaching 
✅ Gain a certificate and talking points to boost university applications

VIEW PROGRAMMES

The role would include:

• Coming along to Great Cornard parkrun on Saturday mornings and Great Cornard Juniors on Sunday mornings.

• Filming and creating fun, engaging content for Facebook and Instagram.

• Helping us set up a TikTok channel, all within parkrun’s social media guidelines.

Students can either:

• Commit for a whole school year, or

• Join on a term-by-term basis – giving more students the chance to get involved across the year.

As with all parkrun volunteering, students will also earn official volunteer credits, which count towards milestone t-shirts. They’ll have the flexibility to both run and volunteer on the same day, or simply volunteer if they prefer.

This is a great way to build confidence, learn new skills, and contribute to the local community in a fun and supportive environment.

This hands-on experience gives learners the chance to develop and pitch a creative idea with guidance from real industry professionals. Across three interactive sessions, students will hear directly from Creative Directors, Animators, Producers and Video Directors working across film, television, advertising and online content, gaining genuine insight into how ideas evolve from an initial spark to the screen.

Students will:

• Work on a real-world creative brief set by professionals

• Receive live feedback on their creative thinking and presentation skills

Our Spring Insight Days are an exciting opportunity for students in years 12 and 13 to explore our three faculties, across two days. Tuesday 24 March will be dedicated to Humanities and Social Sciences and Wednesday 25 March for Science and Health. 

Students will have the opportunity to join two taster sessions of their choice, take a tour of our Colchester campus and meet current Essex students, gaining an insight into life as an Undergraduate student.

On both our insight days and summer school students will go on a site visit, work on a small project and have a Q&A session with both current and recent Real Estate graduates and apprentices who are now working in the Industry. We have additional opportunities at the summer school such as taster lectures, mini careers fairs, networking and linked In sessions.  All events are fully funded by Pathways2property including travel costs to and from the venue, food and accommodation (summer school only).

Applications for the dentistry (residential and online) and online medicine summer schools opened on 26 January, and teachers and advisers play an important role in helping eligible students apply.

Funded by NHS England, the MSC and DSC summer schools offer over 500 free places across England each year. Programmes are delivered in residential and online formats, ensuring students from a wide range of backgrounds can participate.

The initiative focuses on supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds and those living in areas with limited outreach from medical and dental schools.

Dentistry

Summer schools in dentistry are being delivered by:

• University of Liverpool - residential, for Year 12 students (20-23 July 2026)

• Newcastle University - residential, for Year 12 students (7-10 July 2026)

• University of Plymouth - two programmes available: residential (6-9 July 2026) and online (13-15 July 2026), both for Year 11 and Year 12 students

These tours are designed to be informative and engaging, and we welcome anyone with an interest in laboratory medicine and diagnostics.

Students spend their time on Imperial’s South Kensington campus, immersed in the academic department of their choice, allowing them to explore the subject they are passionate about while gaining practical skills relevant to their future studies.

As the programmes we run are fully funded, there are eligibility criteria relating to socioeconomic factors.

At the British Racing School we run a Flexible Learning Programme for students in years 10 and 11 which leads to a Level 1 Diploma in Horse Care and I am getting in touch ahead of our next intake in September 2026. It’s a two year course offered to 14-16 year olds on a day’s release from school each week during term-time and who already ride. During their time at the School students ride and attend classroom-based and practical sessions to improve their riding, equine and racing-related knowledge. At the end of the course and having achieved their Level 1 Diploma, students have the opportunity to start a Level 2 Apprenticeship in a racing yard where they will get on-the-job experience and be a paid member of the team.

During the event, students were taken on a guided walk around the site, where they learned about the different stages of construction and the wide range of career paths available within the industry. They showed great confidence as they introduced themselves to industry professionals, asked thoughtful questions, and engaged in meaningful conversations about future opportunities in engineering, architecture, project management, trades, and more.

Our students represented the school brilliantly and were praised for their maturity, curiosity, and exemplary behaviour throughout the visit.

We are delighted that they have been invited back in three months to see the completed temporary modular homes, which will provide stable accommodation for local people currently living in hostels, hotels, or without permanent housing. This follow‑up visit will offer a valuable opportunity to understand how construction projects progress from foundation to finished build, and to see firsthand the positive impact these developments can have on the community.

We understand that navigating your post-16 pathway can be difficult and we encourage applications from those who may not be planning to join further education, training, or employment for the opportunity to explore a career in bookselling.

Successful candidates will follow a flexible 6 week/135-hour programme which covers the breadth of bookselling, supported by an experienced bookseller and mentor.

T Levels are a two-year qualification, equivalent to three A Levels, that combine classroom learning with a real industry placement. Each 35 minute talk covers a subject or group of closely related subjects offered at university and will be live, online and interactive. We aim to give students an insight into the exciting academic content of the degrees presented, the student experience and outcomes, and what admissions tutors are looking for, whilst differentiating where possible from open day material. Students can join in groups or individually and there is no cost. We expect and hope many schools and colleges will be showing these simultaneously in different rooms.

For students who are unsure about going to university — or who want a more practical, hands‑on option — the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) offers a compelling alternative. 

This programme allows students to earn a salary of £42,000 while working towards a fully funded (BSc) Hons degree in Professional Policing Practice. All qualification fees are covered by the Met, meaning students gain a recognised degree without taking on student debt, while starting a meaningful career straight after education. 

A practical pathway with real‑world experience

Unlike a traditional university route, the PCDA combines on‑the‑job learning with structured classroom teaching. Over three years, students develop practical policing skills while working as frontline officers, build professional confidence, and apply their learning directly within their communities across London.

Future Medical Leaders – Led by Dr Noori Husain, Resident Doctor in Psychiatry at Oxford Health Foundation Trust, with a background in Global Health.

Life Goals: Verified

Classes consist of a combination of mini-lectures, group discussions, team games and problem sets, creating a stimulating environment where students can explore complex ideas with their peers.

Our tutors (typically Masters or PhD students) are selected for their exceptional communication skills, charismatic and inspiring presence and very strong subject knowledge. Their role is to energise and inspire future scholars, and to offer a clear view of the path forward.

Spending several days working in small seminar groups allows participants to build confidence, develop problem-solving skills, and explore areas of personal interest.

The Physics Summer School – Part 1 focuses on Newtonian Mechanics, Electromagnetism, and Astrophysics and is open to students aged 15-18 - you can see a detailed schedule for the Part 1 course here.

“Seriously, after doing the course, I feel so much more knowledgable and interested in Physics. Furthermore, all three of my tutors were kind, engaging and very enthusiastic so the experience itself was actually fun.”

The Physics Summer School – Part 2 focuses on Relativity, Quantum Mechanics, and Cosmology and requires that students have completed a minimum of one year of A-level study in Mathematics (or equivalent) at the time of the course - you can see a detailed schedule for the Part 2 course here.

“The teaching was brilliant for the course, with a huge array of material covered that I am particularly interested in - Quantum Mechanics, Relativity, and Quantum Gravity & the Standard Model. The advanced mathematics was explained very well, and there weren't any points in the course where we were left with questions unanswered. The course content was of an appropriate difficulty - there were plenty of challenging concepts and mathematical tools covered, yet they were all understandable. Not too easy and not too difficult - just right.”

In addition to these Physics courses, we also offer a Mathematics Summer School which will be of interest to any students looking to apply their mathematical knowledge to topics like relativity or quantum theory.

How can my students attend?

📌 The Physics Summer School is open to students aged 15–18. Please note that Part 2 requires at least one year of A Level Maths.

📅 Course Dates: Part 1 (Classical Mechanics, Electromagnetism, and Astrophysics) runs from 10th – 12th August (three days).

Part 2 (Cosmology, Quantum Mechanics, Relativity, and Particle Physics) runs from 17th – 20th August (four days).

⏰ Teaching Hours: Each course runs from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm, including a lunch break.

💻 Course Format: This is a live online event, held in small seminar groups for fully interactive discussions and problem-solving exercises. Sessions will not be recorded, so students must be available during course hours and have a reliable audio and video internet connection.

💰 Course Fee: The cost for Part 1 (three days) is £345. The cost for Part 2 (four days) is £425.

🔒 Booking Information: A 25% non-refundable deposit secures your place. The remaining balance is due eight weeks before the course start date.
