America, a country of extremes. When we think of America, the image quickly arises of large, detached wooden houses with a cozy veranda. The range of houses is impressively beautiful. America is a country where there is a lot of poverty, but also where many extremely rich people live. There are several American inventors who have invented something related to houses. Below are some examples of inventions by Americans.

Maria Telkes - Solar energy

Mária Telkes (1900-1995) was a Hungarian-American biophysicist, scientist and inventor who worked on solar energy technologies. In 1947, she worked with architect Eleanor Raymond to build a house powered by a thermoelectric generator she invented.

Alice Parker - Central heating for homes

Alice Parker (1895-1920) was the inventor of a natural gas central heating system for residential buildings. The system was invented by this African-American woman in 1919.

Josephine Cochrane - Dishwasher

Josephine Garis Cochrane (1839-1913) was from Shelbyville, Illinois and invented the dishwasher in 1886. Cochrane loved to invite friends over for dinner, and even though she wasn't the one to cook, she still wanted the dishes to be finished faster and that her valuable crockery would break less quickly.

Anna Connelly - The prototype of the emergency stairs

Not much is known about this woman's life, but her name is certainly not forgotten. Anna Connelly patented an invention in 1887 that consisted of an iron bridge for emergency use. In the early twentieth century, her model appeared in many mandatory safety standards for buildings in the United States.

Bibliography:

https://www.britannica.com/biography/Maria-Telkes

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_H._Parker

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josephine_Cochrane

https://www.bd.nl/wonen/acht-onmisbare-uitvindingen-door-vrouwen~a7253564/

Big bigger Biggest. That is something that applies in many cases in the United States, especially when it comes to the size of cars. Those who travel to the United States quickly notice that this is not only another continent, but in many cases also a different world. Small cars like in Europe are practically impossible to find there; on the contrary, even the American middle class is particularly large with an average of about five meters. American cars today are so big because they were already big in the past. Below are two inventions made by Americans in the field of cars:

Margaret A. Wilcox - Inventer of the First car heater

Born in 1838 in US, Chicago, Margaret A. Wilcox is a mechanical engineer who invented the first car heater. The first car heater was invented in 1893 and it was this invention that kept 19th century motorists warm!

Mary Anderson - Windshield wipers

Mary Anderson (1866-1953) was a cattle rancher and winemaker, but on a trip to New York in 1902, this Alabama native noticed that streetcar drivers left their windows open so they could clear the snow from the windshields. When she got home, she immediately developed a tool that consisted of a rubber stick that could be attached to the windshield and operated from the inside. She had it made by a local company. Two years later, Mary Anderson tried to sell her invention, but without success because it was considered to have little commercial value. Years later, the car manufacturer Cadillac installed them as a standard accessory in their cars. Now we can't imagine ourselves without windshield wipers!

Bibliography:

https://sofia-technologies.com/2020/03/09/womens-footprint-in-the-automotive-industry/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Anderson_(inventor)

America is also known for standing up for equality between men and women. Feminism was fueled in America in part by Beyonce. In the mid-1990s, a third wave of feminism emerged in America. Beyonce wanted to appeal to the largest possible female audience. There are also some inventions made in the past by American women that will make the woman of today very happy. Here are two examples:

Caresse Crosby - The modern bra

Caresse Crosby (1892-1970), born Mary Phelps, was an American editor, activist and writer who invented and patented the modern bra. Her idea was an instant success because women were freed from stiff suffocating corsets that made it seem like they only "had one chest", to eventually wear something lighter and more comfortable that can also be used for sporting activities.

Theora Stephens - Pressing and curling iron

African Americans have made many contributions to society. These include research and development in the area of technology to improve hair, make life easier, and save lives. Many inventions were made with the improvement of hair care in mind. So is the invention of another African-American woman Theora Stephens. In 1980 or 1983, Theora Stephens developed a proficient pressing and curling iron. This is an invention that is still widely used by many women today and that they will be very happy with.

Bibliography:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caresse_Crosby

https://face2faceafrica.com/article/womens-history-month-meet-theora-stephens-inventor-refined-pressing-curling-iron

http://www.cetla.howard.edu/oes/science/AFAMCONTRTECH.html

The United States has long been at the forefront of technological inventions. Nevertheless, a few years later, the Americans feared that they would lose their leading position in the global IT field. In China, 600,000 engineers graduate annually, compared to 70,000 in the United States. Yet America has made many inventions in the field of the Internet and technology in the past. Below some examples:

Shirley Ann Jackson - Caller ID and putting someone on hold

Born in 1946, Shirley Ann Jackson is an American physicist and the first black African to receive a research doctorate from the leading MIT institute. Among other things, she is the inventor of the technology that allows you to put someone on hold on the phone as the caller ID of someone calling you.

Ada Lovelace - The first algorithm in history

An English mathematician (1815-1852), she is best remembered for writing an algorithm that could be used to generate Bernoulli numbers and is thus considered the first process expressly developed for machine processing. (in Lovelace's case, Babbage's machine).

Olga D. Gonzalez-Sanabria - Electricity for space stations

Olga D. González-Sanabria serves as Director of Engineering at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. To this Puerto Rican we owe the invention of the long-lasting Nickel hydrogen batteries that power the ISS space station.

Grace Murray Hopper - pioneer of computer programming

Grace Murray (1906-1992) came from an American military family. A mathematician and computer scientist in the United States Navy, she is remembered today for her work on the first digital computers in computer history and for coining the term "bug" (programming error).

Bibliography:

https://tweakers.net/nieuws/23949/amerika-wordt-binnenkort-voorbijgestreefd-in-de-it.html

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirley_Ann_Jackson

https://www.livescience.com/63154-ada-lovelace-first-algorithm-auction.html

https://news.yale.edu/2017/02/10/grace-murray-hopper-1906-1992-legacy-innovation-and-service\

https://www.nasa.gov/centers/glenn/about/bios/gonzalez_bio.html
